The Embassy Suites in La Jolla was perfect for our 5 day stay needed during surgery at UCSD. Staff gets 5 stars especially from check-in with fantastic Dafina. Wondeful Julie in guest services let us know our room was ready 2 hours early which was so appreciated and sent messages to see if we needed anything. Housekeeping was great at getting us the extra things we needed. Donald the bellman was fantastic at helping us cart up and down all of our belonging which can be more than average when having surgery. There were a few special things I needed to buy and the helpful check-in staff of Harun and I believe her name was Denise. The greeter I believe named Alberto was very helpful in getting me a transport wheelchair for after surgery to go from the car to the room. The free breakfast, plus made to order was very nice and tasty (I was able to bring up on a tray to our room). We did not attend the evening reception so cannot comment on it, but it appeared people enjoyed. Also there is an hour in the morning where you can feed the koi fish which the children seemed to enjoy.
The hotel is next door to P.F. Chang's restaurant and directly across the street from Westfield mall with nice stores (Vibe restaurant has great ramen), and within 1 1/2 mile from UCSD medical services and also CVS, Whole Foods, etc.
It's true the hotel is older so a little more updating might be nice. We shared the 1 king bedroom with the murphy bed in the living space which was perfect, the mattresses were better than mine at home which I am missing haha. The refrigerator is not big (I believe 3 shelves with also door shelves) but had enough room for the deli items we purchased at Whole Foods and for drinks. The toilets are short so I suggest if you are tall, have knee, mobility or surgery issues, you might want to bring or pick-up at CVS a portable raised toilet seat - it made all the difference. Our bathroom was not a "disability bathroom" - but because the bathtub/shower combo had a great long handicap bar it was not difficult to get into and out of the shower for us.
For a difficult time we had a much more relaxed stay because of the fabulous, caring and attentive staff at Embassy and the accommodations. Plus it worked out well for my service dog, they have a little doggie area where he was comfortable. There are also about 9 handicap parking spaces, 7 out front and 2 in the garage.
Keep in mind, the elevators can take longer during peak times when more people are traveling up and down with baggage.
I have to add a note that the diversity in staff and clients was a great testiment to Hilton and Embassy.
I hope my review will help others who may need a wonderful accomodating hotel. There are corporate discount codes available for several programs including UCSD Health.
Note to Embassy, you might want to update your website to include pictures of the bathrooms and kitchenettes with your rooms it would have lessen anxiety with special needs. Thank you for hiring the right people to...
Read moreWe had a great stay at Embassy Suites San Diego La Jolla! The rooms were really nice—having a separate living room with a pull-out sofa, a dining table that doubled as a desk (complete with a desk chair), and a kitchenette area with a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, and sink made the stay extra comfortable. It felt like a mini apartment, which was awesome for relaxing after long days. There are two TVs—one in the bedroom and one in the living room—which was great. The bedroom had a door for privacy, which didn’t close completely, but since it was just the two of us, it wasn’t a problem. The complimentary breakfast was pretty decent! There were waffles, French toast, sausage, scrambled eggs, potato wedges, cereal, yogurt, fruit, pastries, juices, and coffee (both decaf and regular). My only complaint is that the omelet bar on the weekend was really packed—and that’s the only station that has the bacon and pancakes. If you want those, you have to wait in a long line. On the last day, I got up early, grabbed everything from the omelet station, and took it back to the room. Later, we just heated it up in the microwave—super convenient! The hotel itself is beautiful inside, with a koi pond and a little fountain that add a peaceful vibe. They also have an evening happy hour for adults, which includes two free drinks—beer, wine, or mixed drinks. You can even upgrade for premium options (prices were posted). Tip your bartender! Outside the bar area, there are fireplaces and you can order food to enjoy out there. The pool is indoors, and the hot tub is outside. From 10 PM to midnight, the pool and hot tub are adults-only, which is a great touch. They have a small gym and filtered water stations throughout the hotel to refill water bottles. The staff at the front desk were super friendly and helpful. They even held our bags after checkout since our flight wasn’t until later—very convenient!
A few tips: -Make sure to double-check your bill—we were charged for bottled water we didn’t drink. -You’ll need your key card to use the elevator, which was a small hassle. And to get to the pool area. -Towels are provided in the pool area, and there are also two private bathrooms with showers. -There’s a great Mexican restaurant called Red O Taste of Mexico. (It is pretty fancy) within walking distance with both a regular and late-night happy hour on their patio—definitely worth trying! -The hotel is only 18 minutes from downtown San Diego, about 17 minutes from La Jolla Shores, and 20 minutes from the USS Midway. -It’s right across the street from the UTC shopping center—tons of food and shopping options and very dog-friendly!
We didn’t rent a car and Ubered everywhere, which ended up costing us nearly $600 for rides to/from the airport and around town—just something to keep in mind. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would...
Read moreWell, I would have to say that this by far was the worst hotel experience that my family has encountered.
Just imagine being at Disneyland all day and looking forward to a property that seemed nice via the reviews and the photos....and then you arrive at this dilapidated and outdated facility. From the moment we arrived, it was an atrocity. The outside parking lot was full, the entire hotel entry circle was blocked by tour buses that occupied the fire line, which is illegal, and to add icing to the cake, the parking structure was a one-way with all compact parking to the 3rd level and absolutely NO ELEVATORS!! I'm not even sure how this meets ada (Americans with disabilities act) requirements.
We finally made it inside, and we were greeted by the front desk. It's about 2230 around this point. We received our room key and made it to the room. We walked in and noticed that the room was outdated and had a strong odor of cigarette smoke. We then noticed the room had not been cleaned. This was aggravating because we did a digital key check-in at around 1600. We called the front desk and made our request known, and they gave us another room.
We didn't know what to expect at this point, given everything that had transpired above. We made it to the room and noticed this room was better by a fraction. There was black mold in the shower, sheets had holes and blood on them for the sofa bed, the sofa bed upholstery was tattered, and ripped, front vanity had toothpaste stains, and the overall room was dirty. At this point, given the time and the whole day, we decided to rest and hopefully speak to the front desk in the morning about a compensation or refund.
Once morning came, I spoke to the front desk manager at the time by the name of Brad. He apologized for the experience, and he offered us 30,000 points, which I thought was an insult. I then responded and said I would like all the points that I used, which was 50,000. He then said that was excessive, lol. He said that the room was still occupied for the evening. This room was only occupied by force. If we would have checked-in at 1600 and not had a full day at Disneyland and then an hour or so drive, and arrived at this property until 2230, we would have definitely pulled up the Hilton app and stayed elsewhere!!! I still have yet to receive my points, and I will be calling today for a full refund of my cash as well, including the $42 parking.
Overall, as a diamond member, this was a complete and utterly display that doesn't represent the Hilton brand that I've known for decades. If anyone reads this in its entirety, YOUR BETTER OFF NOT STAYING AT THIS PROPERTY. YOU WILL BE HIGHLY...
