The following was harvested from my primary responses to Best Western's satisfaction survey (sorry there are no precursory questions for context):
Best Western Plus, Bayside Inn, San Diego:
Front desk staff were exceptionally professional and helpful, as were other service staff (including those assisting with breakfast). The lobby was small and perhaps a bit oddly arranged, but constrained by architectural limitations (and cost/sqft!). It, along with adjacent halls, stairs, and elevators were clean, tasteful, modern and appealing. The stairwells were very dark and the wait times for the elevator were frustrating, but neither were significant hindrances to our stay-experience. The room itself was good size and everything worked well. The furnishings, finishes, decorations, and linens were a bit dated, but certainly within "value" expectations. The doors to rooms were VERY noisy when closing. I think we could hear every door in the hotel close every morning/night and best attempts to "soften" our closing was fruitless. Parking was tight but manageable. Included breakfast was adequate- odd, but clean, contemporary dining area, nice variety of food choices adn the food was decent (pastries were good, eggs were not, most other elements were average). The view from our room and the location of the hotel were exceptional. All-in-all, my expectations were exceeded and our stay was a great value! Thanks for a positive experience.
Unfortunately, I did not get names, but front desk staff and breakfast attendants were cleanly, and uniformly dressed. They were polite, professional and helpful with our inquiries about things to do/see and best methods by which we could do them. They made all administrative transactions smooth and sensible. They facilitated public transportation options and conveyed themselves as genuinely concerned about the quality of our stay. I also noticed they were patient and calm with more "challenging" patrons.
Simply stated- consistency in quality of food items, particularly the eggs. Most of the "starchy stuff" was pretty good. Hot and cold drinks were fine as well. Some of the warm foods were closer to room temperature and the eggs... I'm pretty sure they weren't actually eggs. Personally, I would have preferred additional fresh fruit options- perhaps some cut fruit and tomatoes, and perhaps some nutritionally-oriented options like leaf-spinach for folks that prefer some greens with breakfast. As with other elements of our stay- the value equation was still positive overall and the polite, professional service went a long way to offset the average food.
I believe I have provided adequate detail about our experience. All-in-all excellent value was provided to us by the Best Western Plus- Bayside in San Diego. In a tough market, packet with glitzy~glossy options, the typically mid-tier Best Western (and similar ilk) was significantly boosted by the quality of the staff and the presentation of the public spaces, despite space...
Read moreThe Manager was incredibly rude and unhelpful and went out of her way to be rude when we had asked to move rooms due to the loud construction at 6am and all day. The front desk agent had said they could move us but it would be an upgrade of an extra $30. We weren't asking for an upgrade and honestly having a view of a pool, is not an upgrade when its enclosed. We asked that they comp us for the extra $30 and she outright refused. They said that construction has been there for years and not their problem. They can't control it. Then she said it's(the warning of construction) on the website when you book( later found under fine print of "need to know" link). She also said we would have received an email stating the construction...we never received such an email, and then she just kept repeating that it's on their website and we could leave if we liked. We really would have but we didn't want to spend the day trying to find a new place to stay. She said she was the mamager and we could call corporate if we liked. We called customer service and they said they can't force the manager to comp the room but they offered extra 3000 points four our troubles. We decided to stay where we were. She completely ruined the entire experience and my vacation. I've been going to best westerns for years and even work with the one in our area and never ever have I seen such horrible and service. Even when we asked of we could split our points...she said no it's only for the person who reserved it. Even though we split payment. We have always been able to split points and when we called customer service they said that they would do that for us. How this is person is a Manager is beyond us. For they clearly had no empathy for our lack of sleep and exhaustion from travel. Nor did they even apologize for being rude. I went back the next day to apologize to the front desk counter agent for the whole interaction, who initially helped us, and she accepted and understood. This manager should not be overseeing customer service. She even said, "we've been complaining since we got here"...when the first night we asked to split the points. The rest of the staff, perhaps a family run business were incredibly friendly and supportive hosts. Sad that she ruined it for us all.
Rooms were comfortable, good location for access to Trolley and Little Italy.
UPDATE - their response to this complaint "We are sorry we didn't meet your expectations"...That's all they have to say?! ...If having empathy and compassion for your guests is too high an expectation on our part, that's pretty...

Check-in was pretty painless & surprisingly they were able to check us in super early (we arrived ~11am on Saturday so we could go to the Little Italy Farmer's Market). They asked if I wanted to Park in their on-site garage which was $20 per night (there's no gates or guards but the vehicle seemed safe), which is what we did & we filled out the tag info to hang from our rearview mirror. I made my reservation on the Best Western website so they had my Rewards info (I'm a Diamond member) - I put it in the Special Request box that we were celebrating my birthday & wanted a Bayview room if at all possible - they were able to reserve me a Bayview room on the 11th floor without issue.
Each morning you can go to the front desk & select a Bfast Grab & Go bag per person -- I was told we could select a sandwich, burrito or yogurt. Found the sandwiches & burritos come with a protein/nut bar, oj & small water... Yogurt comes with an apple, danish & small water. My fav was the croissant sandwich... had I known earlier I would have asked for it each morning but I only got it on my last morning 😅. They gave me an english-muffin-type of sandwich the 1st morning (very basic), then 2nd morning I tried the burrito (unfort cold spots when I heated it up in the microwave), then 3rd morning I tried the yogurt (good basic light) & then 4th morning back to a sandwich which I got lucky with the croissant type (yummy!).
The room is clean, used but pretty well maintained/updated. Our fridge & microwave both worked well. We used the coffee pot every morning. Not many extra outlets to plug in your laptops & mobiles but we made do & unplugged a lamp or two. The beds were soft - a bit too soft for me but my MIL loved it & my spouse kept sleeping in til 10am so pretty sure it was to his liking 🤣. 4 pillows per bed, they were excellent plumpness 👍
We relaxed in the hot tub almost every afternoon/evening 🥰, nice & hot just like we like it! The bubbles stayed contained inside the tub (many hot tubs seem to splash crazily in your face/outside the tub) so it was really nice to turn the jets on. Pool towels were avail on the shelf all bundled up in plastic.
My spouse went to the gym once or twice during our stay 🏃♂️. It's surprisingly cold in there but great if you're active/sweating in the gym!
All the facilities/shared spaces we saw were clean & well...
