Thank you for turning a nightmare into a dream! First time here, very hesitant to stay at Hostels. However, this little gem of a hotel gave me a run for my money. One of the few places that accepts cash, a low deposit of $4 and enjoys if you pay by card, but it's not obligated. Before you roll your eyes, let's start with safety. Secure, from the moment you enter the front door. The backdoor is secured, you have the privacy of a backyard with bikes on racks. It enters this amazing kitchen, like full on kitchen, not a kitchenette. I like to eat out, but this time, I stayed in. Love the kitchen and it also has a quiet dining area ๐Ÿ˜ low lit with a ๐Ÿงฑ wall. I love the details. You can store your food in private bins as well. Did I mention the coffee is delicious? Now, about rooms..CLEAN. Soft beds & pillows, you will be provided with fitted sheets and pillowcase at check-in. Towel and Blankets are also provided, you can bring your own toiletries. Shampoo/Conditioner/Body wash installed with the privacy of the bathroom, in your room. The water is hot! Very important ๐Ÿ˜„ clean water dispenser also available, you can bring your own botte. Common areas later in the evening are also quiet, for those who enjoy staying in and doing work โ˜บ๏ธ You don't have to leave the building to do laundry. Nearby, there is everything, from ๐Ÿš† to McDonald's. Did I mention great coffee? Tea is also available. Although there is no elevator, you have a very cool and authentic experience of a upscale dorm experience. You can opt for a single room or share with the homies. Classic architecture, high ceilings and spiraling staircases. It's cool to me, so I have say, 5/5. Excellent ๐Ÿ‘Œ Service. Did I mention safety? Officers are nearby Union Square, if you feel like taking a stroll. Great location, great staff, and wonderfully diverse travelers. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I have. Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š Happy New Year ๐ŸŽŠ P.S. You can also store bags here via Bounce app ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Stayed at this hotel in September, was very nice and cozy. Although I'll list some of the pros and cons. Pros -Very convenient to Union Square, cable car stops, bus & light rail, BART Powell St station (easy commute to and from the airport), and major shops and restaurants. -Clean room and sitting area included on lower level. They allow you to cook your own food as they include a kitchen too as well as a fridge. Laundry is a reasonable price. -A no smoking hotel is always the best. -Noise level is quite low (depending on the room you're staying in). -Door is locked so that no unexpected strangers would be able to sneak in. -Luggage room for storing belongings prior to 3 PM check in. Cons -Going up and down the steep hill by the doorsteps is a good exercise, but can be tiring at the end of the day after exploring San Francisco (after all, San Francisco is made up of hills). -Chip vending machine doesn't work, lots of unsold snacks. -The kitchen is closed early in the morning. So if you wake up quite early and want to cook some breakfast, you'll have to either go out to eat, or wait till it opens later in the day. -For the laundry you'll have to purchase your own detergent. -There's no elevator but it's not a big hassle going up and down the stairs (unless you have a big heavy luggage). -No air conditioning, which is reasonable as in California the temp drops at night. The windows are open and the shutters open and are sealed tight. Overall I highly recommend this hotel as the price is not that bad. 10/10

On Friday the 27th of May 2022, we arrived at the hotel facilities with a booking.com reservation. We paid for the room before seeing it. Once inside, we realized that the beds were very dirty. There were black dust and fat all over the mattresses, cigarette burns over the sheets, and the pillows were so unhealthy that we would've gotten sick if we had laid our heads on them. Immediately, we headed back to the front desk for a refund. We didn't want to risk our health in a place like this. The man at the front desk and his manager refused to give us any solution. They didn't even offer another room. They wanted us to go back and sleep over the unhealthy mattresses and pillows. The service was awful and would've been bad for our health. We did not spend more than 5 minutes inside the room. We spoke to both the receptionist and his manager. They said that there was no problem with the room and that the only option was for us to go back and sleep there. We insisted that they needed to check the room. After they saw how bad the beds were, they provided us with three bedsheets to put on top of the unhealthy substances. We spent approximately 30 minutes asking politely for a solution, but they were not attentive to our reclamation for a refund.

A SCAM that preys upon students, the homeless and anyone desperate for a place to sleep!

My friend booked through Agoda weeks in advance for us to attend a funeral. The listing said we had a private room, and mentioned NOTHING about the mess we found ourselves in that was a MIXED SIX BED DORMITORY. Jet lagged and already in grief, we arrived and checked in, only to step one foot in the door, absolutely horrified that there were 5 other people sleeping in the dark.

The staff offered nothing but excuses and deflection and claimed that since we already checked in, our money was now forfeit. Any attempts to reconcile this at the desk were met with further deflection and trained responses to protect the profit of the business and to take EVEN MORE MONEY from us to "upgrade" our service to a private room FOR ONLY ONE NIGHT or to handle it via Agoda, or to EMAIL THE MANAGER. Not CALL, EMAIL.

OBVIOUSLY a massive scam, the property owner clearly has instilled several degrees of separation from this grossly predatory service and himself in order to avoid liability for circumstances just as this. When questioned, the hostel staff admitted to NEVER HAVING MET OR SPOKEN TO THE MANAGER IN PERSON. So even the STAFF are kept in the dark about the way their business operates while they are paid pennies for handling the owner's dirty work.

The surrounding area, while beautiful and social, is also EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. especially for young women at night! We demanded a FULL REFUND and are STILL WAITING FOR IT TO PROCESS. This left us COLD AND DEFENSELESS AND BROKE ON THE STREETS last night while we grieve the loss of a close friend. We are TRAUMATIZED.

ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE, UNETHICAL AND...

I stayed here for three weeks in the 6 bed mixed room. I enjoyed my stay a lot and plan to stay again. The guests are super chill and so is the staff. The patio is rad and a great place to chill after a long day. No one steals, people mind their own business but you may meet a few friends along the way like I did. They have a no refund policy but you can always extend your stay. I ended up leaving a few days early and didnโ€™t get a refund of $140 but I know for the future. Plus for SF it was a great deal to start with so I canโ€™t complain. Itโ€™s noisy but itโ€™s also SF so thatโ€™s not their fault. I highly recommend bringing ear plugs in case people snore or you hate city noise, youโ€™ll be just fine. They cleaned the room every day! Thereโ€™s a washer and dryer available for use for $4.50 for a wash and dry but you can only use it after 4:30pm-8am thereโ€™s a change machine too, you just have to buy/bring soap. I saw one beetle who visited me in the shower but he wasnโ€™t gonna hurt anyone! The showers have shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. Be sure to bring $10 for a card key deposit or they will take your ID till you give it to them. Bring a lock too, there are roll out bins to store belongings. I was able to fit a carry on suitcase and my backpack in it with a little Tetris. When you check in they provide you a towel and sheets. Each bed has two outlets and two USB ports, a light, pillow and blanket. Overall, be sure to read their policy, the place is clean and worth the stay! Also City Chopsticks has great food...
