What a hidden gem in the Tenderloin! I've passed by it a few times on my way to Huntington Park and thought the menu sounded tasty and diverse enough to try. I stopped in on a Friday night and was surprised by how a small it was on the inside. There's hardly any room between the bar and the tables, so it makes walking to the bathroom a bit of a hassle (so, if you or someone in your party has accessibility needs, I wouldn't recommend it - they do have some outdoor seating though!) But besides that, the ambience inside is cozy, warm, and friendly. They have four TVs and have a decent variety in subscriptions - of course, you'll be able to watch any and every San Francisco/Bay Area team whenever they're playing.
The first time, I split a chicken sandwich and the quesadilla, and I was especially surprised by how tasty the quesadilla was! Not spicy in the slightest, but it was packed with mouthwatering flavor and had a good amount of chicken and cheese nestled inside. It also comes with a generous portion of avocado, sour cream, and salsa. The chicken sandwich was juicy, and the sweet potato fries went well with sides of ranch and BBQ sauce (fair warning: they do charge for additional condiments outside of ketchup and hot sauce!)
I'm not much of a drinker, but I was curious about the Soju cocktails. My friend had the Bloody Mary and I had the Lemon Drop. The Lemon Drop really just tasted like a tangy lemonade with lemon sugar around the glass - and that's a good thing! The soju went down smooth, and my friend liked the Bloody Mary so much, she got another!
The next time I stopped by, I had the shepherd's pie, which was just a bit of a let down. The presentation was great and I loved the layer of mashed potatoes before the pie. However, it was a bit bland - needed to add some salt and pepper to really bring the flavor out of on the beef and veggies. Still, it was a comforting meal on a chilly Saturday afternoon, so it did it's job fine.
Definitely recommend if you're looking for pubs around the Tenderloin that has great food, exceptional cocktails, and a nice,...
Read moreWe walked by and decided to try the Sutter Pub & Restaurant on a Monday evening. The pub was about half full when we arrived around 6:30pm and stayed that way for the duration of our stay of about two and a half hours.
The interior of the pub is very genuine and quite nice for a pub like this. It has several TV screens for those that enjoy watching sports. The bar counter is nice and high with high chairs for patrons that prefer sitting at the bar. There is only one booth in the bar, and then a number of tables and chairs along the walls of the bar. The booth is located next to the bathroom, which might be a bit challenging if you are seated at the both on an evening with many guests. The ceiling is very tall, but the sound level in the pub is somehow not suffering as a result, as least not on a weekday evening.
The pub has an excellent beer selection with many draft beer options, and even more on bottles and cans. We tried a number of different beers and enjoyed having such a wide variety of choices. You an find anything from a lager to a wheat beer, or an IPA or gose. We were impressed by the wide range of options.
The menu is typical for a pub like this, with all the dishes you would expect in a pub. We tried fried chicken, fish and chips, tacos, and burgers. The burger was cooked perfectly to order, the fish and chips were very good, and so were the tacos and fried chicken. We were positively surprised by the quality of the food at the Sutter Pub & Restaurant. The food was served pretty quickly after ordering, and we didn‘t feel like we experienced a long wait.
The staff was amazing. Extremely friendly and helpful, and also making recommendations as needed. Our waitress was very attentive and made us feel welcome and appreciated, even if this was our first visit. With service like that, and with such a big beer selection and good food, we will definitely come back to Sutter Pub and Restaurant.

Read morei ordered takeout from Sutter in order to take it back to my hotel to eat it. i showed up after the “ready by time”, and noticed several other groups waiting for pickup orders. despite trying to get the attention of staff, no one acknowledged me for at least 15 minutes. my friend left to come back in and pretend to look for a table in order to be spoken to, and when she mentioned takeout, the waiter just said “sorry we’re busy“ without even taking the name.
someone else finally acknowledged me a bit after that, and took my name, and said that my food would be ready shortly. however, he then left with a delivery, and we sat around for another 20 minutes waiting without anyone speaking to us (i even left my friend, went to a wine store, and came back). My friend sat there the whole time, where you could see into the kitchen, and could see that they weren’t working on our food (it was all salads and burgers, which we hadn’t ordered). they definitely seemed focused on making food for local hotel deliveries and that is it. we saw people who came and sat down after we arrived order and get food while we waited. finally, someone asked my name again, and when i gave it, they went and grabbed two things of food that had clearly been done for a while. when attempted to eat it (our hotel was only a block away). the french toast was cold and the mac and cheese was lukewarm and the cheese seems weird and stringy because of it. It was also missing the panko breadcrumbs entirely. would...
