Perfect when traveling on a budget and wanting to explore Downtown SF. Had a a pleasant 3 night stay. It is an older hotel, but I can appreciate well maintained antiques; so this didn't bother me much. I arrived in SF early and the front desk staff checked me in and held my bags so I could explore! (They held my bag for free checking in, but if you need them to hold your bags after check out it's a $10 charge per bag). You get an actual key for your room which I haven't gotten to experience in some time.
My room was towards the back of the building, facing the inside courtyard- so no view, but also no noise! The rooms weren't as tiny as I'd expected based on other reviews; they room looked exactly like the website picture so I wasn't expecting too much anyways but it was fairly clean. (There were some stains on the floor, but I've seen stains on Hilton room floors- and I always pack slippers when I travel.) The bed was definitely harder than my own at home, but I managed to sleep pretty well during my stay. There is a tv, but it's only got about 20 channels. If you're a big sports of news person you'll be find. They had USA, TNT, Cartoon Network, and a couple other popular channels but nothing too fancy (if you're a big tv person).
While I noticed many budget hotels in SF had shared bathrooms, the room had a private en suite bathroom. I did have to take a step up to enter the bathroom, so if this may cause a hazard for you be sure to inform the desk staff! The bathroom was clean and I had the necessary toiletries. I don't typically enjoy housekeeping on short stays so no one cleaned my room/bathroom; but I was able to get refreshed towels and things from housekeeping staff with no problem.
The amenities are basic, but I was aware of this when booking. There're no microwaves or fridges in the room, so I was intentional about what I ate and brought back to the room for snacks. There was a pedestal fan in the room as well as a heater. The weather got a bit chilly at night during my stay so I did use the heater and it worked amazing to keep the whole room warm!
There was no breakfast, but the hotel is situated directly across from a mini mart, Starbucks, and a lovely french cafe. There's also a variety of cafes and restaurants in walking distance. The hotel is situated literally 50 feet from the Chinatown entrance, which made for great exploring. The hotel is located at the bottom of a slight hill, but if you walk up Bush towards Stockton/Bush there's easy access to public transportation and Union Square!
I felt very comfortable walking around the area both during the day and night as a solo female traveler. I'm from a bigger city, so sadly I've got experience with interacting safely with those without homes. I didn't have any negative encounters at any time I was in SF, but I definitely felt more comfortable walking around the hotel than the Tenderloin district. (I walked and rode Bart most of my trip, but I Uber'd through Tenderloin to avoid any unnecessary stops.) The hotel does lock the front doors at night. There will be a desk agent there to open the doors, so be mindful of that when you come back late!
If you plan on enjoying and exploring SF and can appreciate a nice, no thrills hotel then I'd highly recommend SF Plaza...
Read moreEmotional maturity of night receptionist is worrisome! Do Not Stay if only females residing!!! Started out with him telling me there were issues with my card? Payment on my bank app showed it going through. I called my bank and they confirmed payment went through. It took a half hour for him to give me a room. He spent that time on the phone with someone walking him through what to do. One of my guest mentioned the issues with YOUR system with my card were weird, (his vibe made us feel like we were being scammed cause he wanted to keep running the card I proved already went through) he took this personally and started yelling “you need to leave immediately”! “leave this hotel”! “do not call me weird”! We had to talk him from the ledge of his power trip of leaving us with no where to go. He is an absolute insecure man that made me and my guest feel uncomfortable…. even after I confirmed with my bank I was being harassed and belittled and treated like a thief. Only for him to tell me hours later that my payment did go through without an apology! He definitely ruined my stay and gave me the creeps. Also, tv was broken in my room, no outlet worked except in bathroom and shower had hair in it. Star...
Read moreRoom 612. Rooms are clean, bathroom is small, TV has no guide (I made a channel guide for 13 channels and look up schedule on the internet). Lucky for me I am not going to spend much time in the room. No microwave and no refrigerator; those are reserved for the people that live here. I have stayed at another hotel in the area and this area feels like home. The location is the best part, you step outside, turn left and you are at the China Town Gate on Grant St. Union Square is right around the corner. BART and the SF Transit Center are very close. Masks are required on the premises. The location of the hotel makes up for inconveniences and I gave high marks for the room. It's also quiet for being in SF. I really like having a desk/table with chair and I really like the big leather chair in the corner it is so comfy and I can watch TV from there. Lighting is good (3 lights). Please note, this is room 612; other...
