Samesun Staff,
This was my first time visiting San Francisco, and the staff made the experience! Where do I begin?
Let's start off with the rooms: they were fantastic! I've been to hostels in Europe, South America, Mexico, and the United States, and Samesun Hostel in San Francisco has been the best one thus far. No lie. For starters, each shared room has its own bathroom. This is a rarity in the hostel world when you're visiting big cities like San Francisco, so it makes a huge difference when you need to go to the bathroom at inconvenient times, especially as night. Also, shoutout to the cleaning staff; they always say "good morning" and keep the rooms and bunks clean everyday.
Let's shift gears to the hostel staff themselves. To put into perspective how awesome, thoughtful, helpful, and friendly the staff are here, I'll put things into context. Tax filing is due in 3 days, yet I decided to leave a Samesun review before finishing my tax submission. You read that right: they deserve a ton of credit for making this experience so memorable that I couldn't wait until after I finished my taxes or checked out of my room. Absolutely legendary staff. Below are my individual shoutouts.
Shoutout to Eryn for organizing an awesome group outing to the San Francisco Nighttime Food Truck Festival. She was friendly, inclusive, and a fun person to be around. Also, the food truck festival was insanely fun. She deserves kudos for this hostel activity.
Shoutout to MeEyeUh (I might've messed up the spelling, but that is exactly how her name sounds phonetically). MeEyeUh handled a customer service situation very professionally. I was sitting in the lobby doing some work when two guests walked in and had some issues with their reservation. MeEyeUh went above and beyond by explaining the rules clearly, finding a solution to their problem, and keeping a friendly demeanor the entire time. If you've ever worked at a steakhouse, that is what we call A1 customer service.
Shoutout to James for being a great conversationalist. Most hostel staff will be friendly, answer questions, and move on with their day, But James is on another level (shall I say super saiyan?). When he is not occupied with a work task, he is engaging to talk with: great sense of humor and offers fun activity suggestions unsolicited. For hostel visitors who are on the shy side, you want a guy like James.
Shoutout to Jorge for being the DJ king of the hostel. When I think about my previous hostel experiences, none ever played music in the lobby. Not only does Samesun Hostel play music in the lobby (which brings up the positive vibe of the place), but his taste in music was blessed by the Latin Gods themselves. Keep playing those tunes, Jorge. You know how to match the music with the vibez.
Shoutout to Hayden for handling a situation well with a homeless individual. I was walking back from lunch when I saw Hayden giving detailed information to law enforcement about an individual who loitered in the hostel's parking garage. He was calm and patient and resumed his job responsibilities as soon as the situation was resolved.
For the staff I haven't met, I'm confident they are awesome in their own way. Also, Wifi here is good for digital nomads (I can attest to this). The free breakfast options are great. The vibes are great. This hostel is great. Whoever is the owner or supervisor of these staff better recognize this special team. And if you think I'm lying, who would ever take 30 minutes on a Saturday morning to write a...
Read moreI booked a 4 night stay for my wife through booking.com, from 7th May Through 11th May. On 10th May when my wife was at the reception of the hostel in San Francisco around 6pm, The reception person snatched the room keys from my wife, and demanded to see the Identification. My wife got scared for her safety, and kept on asking whats wrong to which the reception person replied I am giving you final chance to produce the id. My wife tried to reason with him, asking for more information on whats wrong, at this point crying and scared out of her mind, but got no answer. The receptionist got my wife's luggage out of her room, put all the stuff from her bed in a trash bag, and asked her to leave the property. My wife again asked what is wrong, I have paid for my stay, and told her she is a regular at your hostel since she is a student at California College of the Arts and lives in New Hampshire, every month she stays at the hostel for 4 nights Wednesday through Sunday and this has never happened to her ever. The receptionist at this point told her, she is trespassing, she doesn't have a valid booking and she needs to leave. She had a valid booking, she paid for her stay, produced a physical passport during checkin, and had not violated any rules of the hostel.
Here the receptionist told her he is blacklisting her, he is going to call every single hostel in San Francisco and have them blacklist her.
I am trying to make sense of this situation, what could she possibly have done to deserve this treatment
Replying to the response: Not only is your response ridiculous, but you are outrightly lieing about everything, without taking responsibility of your mistake. Fake Passport - My wife is a legal immigrant in this country, so if she entered this country using her passport, not sure how you came to conclusion she had a fake passport. Cooking eggs using electric kettle - My wife is a student at CCA, she leaves the hostel everyday in the morning around 7.30am, even before your breakfast time starts. Who in their right mind would cook eggs in an electric kettle? Find some good excuse if you are lying. Valid Identification - My wife checked in by showing valid Identification ie passport and her own credit card which was also on file. She stayed at the property for 3 nights, are you saying your staff checked her in without checking her valid id? Talk about professionalism. Living 4 nights every week - You do know that all the stays are documented right? Check your database and you will find my wife stayed for 4 nights every month, she is a commuter student and she only travels to san Fransisco for 5 days. I have documented proof, since all my bookings are prepaid done using booking.com Disturbing other people - This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard, she is the kind of person who follows all the rules and regulations, and would not consciously disturb anyone, let alone creating a ruckus. When your team was kicking her out, she was crying and humiliated and yet she did not create any scene, she left the premises. Finally, Thank you for documenting this on this review, now I can take legal recourse against your property for discrimination and false accusations of theft,...
Read moretl;dr — infested and riddled with disease. 💕💗💓💞💕💝💘💖 should be shut down 💗💓💞💕💝💘💖what a fantastic place to stay at…if you want to almost die! i understand sometimes nurses, flight attendants, other people in talent might need a crashpad but you can do so much better than this place. i was fooled by the positive reviews. receptionists getting high before their shifts in the back lobby. false advertising w the photos you see. the hostel itself: terrible wifi, worse than buffering or lags. no on-site laundry and any neaby places charge $4/load to wash and $6/15 minutes of drying. No one takes cards in the nearby area so needing to locate exact change is a nightmare. Trash is revolting and constantly overflowing. Ditto w the recycling, though I never see anyone recycle here. No freezer. Just fridges. Nowhere to cook unless you just need hot water and a microwave. The rooms: none of the rooms are ever that bright. you might face bricks if you’re on the back of the building. even rooms on the opposite side are shrouded in perpetual, dark, dreary, depressing darkness. there are no drains in the bathroom and the only heating/cooling is placed on the worst side possible so the carpet directly outside the bathroom is perpetually moist and swampy. to get anything done you might be tempted to head into the lobby. the lobby: germ central, swarms of people coughing and sneezing with no mask. reception acts oblivious bc they are penny-pinching for dear life. negligent reception: guests are gross and leave food stains on the lobby table, and somehow this never leads to signage or even directly asking ADULTS to pick up after themselves. They break microwave glass plates being reckless and rowdy. Instead of using the cameras to charge these people…they remain passive. horrific management: rude, like to sweep everything under the rug, treat their cleaning staff awful which is why this place must be so riddled w disease. why would you reuse towels when covid case numbers, rsv, etc are peaking again? the first day i checked in, i was informed my room would not be ready bc guests called in to say the toilet was flooding. they declined to answer if they would clean the carpet from all that nasty sewage. I would say the most honest reviews are people who saw bugs or say they got sick. They put two girls consecutively in the bunk directly underneath mine who were horking plegm and coughing and feverish at all hours. almost died going to reception phoning a friend and telling them i was ill. a receptionist saw this but was on the phone w their friend and never thought it was a good idea to intervene or follow-up. Scuzzy to the max. Avoid unless you have...
