The McElroy Octagon House is a fun little place with great colonial-era treasures! Then house is currently owned by the National Society of the Colonial Danes. They collect and preserve many colonial era homes all over the US. The house is open on very few hours throughout the month. It is not marketed well as well. There were 3 or 4 docents that were available at the place & showed great hospitality. There were cookies, cider & Christmas decor. My favourite exhibit was the hand drawn map of the Americas from the 17th century. The small garden outside the house is a really pretty place to enjoy.

I finally was able to visit the Octagon House - run by volunteers. I got an educational tour by volunteer docents. The docents are friendly; explanations can be detailed as you want; docents love telling the history of each piece of furniture, pictures and mementos; transcripts are original; and many documents were on loan to other museums. The house concentration is on the 18th century. Most furnishings, etc. are donated. The tour is only good if you are into history of old houses and museums. You need to make an appointment for a tour.

Have you ever wondered where the term 'Sleep tight' comes from? Because I found out on this tour! I can't wait to built my own mini replica!

This is a lot of fun if you're in the Union St. area. This is an 8 sided house that is over 150 years old. Cool historical value. Also a great little park and gardens. Just one of those kinda wacky things that we San Francisco folks love . Very interesting, about the Dames who saved this place....
