Hyatt House Shelton — Hotel in Shelton

I stay at this hotel frequently for business travel, so I have a pretty good idea of what this Hyatt House is all about.

I’ll start with my main issue with this location as it is something that drives me crazy. The WiFi speed at this hotel is absolutely atrocious. I know this is a common theme with hotels in general, but this is actually the worst WiFi I’ve ever used. It makes DSL look like high speed fiber optic Internet. If you aren’t old enough to have experienced the speeds of 56K dial-up modems, just drop by this hotel with your favorite device.

All of this is assuming you can actually connect and remain connected to the WiFi of course. There have been stays where I can’t even connect to the WiFi. The staff is of little help when these problems arise, but it’s hard to blame them and they can’t do anything about it. Basically, don’t even think of coming here trying to stream episodes of your favorite Netflix show or watch a YouTube video. Hopefully you have a phone plan with unlimited data and the ability to use it as a hotspot

With that rant out of the way...

I’ll start by saying the rooms are pretty decent, particularly the studio rooms which offer a kitchenette with a small stove and full size refrigerator. Beds are comfortable, but make sure to check the cleanliness of your sheets before jumping in. Speaking with locals in the area, this location was notorious for bed bug problems in the past. I personally haven’t had any issue except for having dirty sheets a couple of times.

Most lamps (bedside and desk) have outlets on them which are useful charging devices like phones and tablets. Other than that, it has pretty much everything you would expect a hotel of this level to have (flat screen TVs, full size ironing board and steam iron, fridge, microwave).

This hotel offers a free breakfast which is cool, but quite frankly the food is below average at best. The only options worth trying are the omelet bar (if it’s actually operational), or the fresh fruit they set out. I can’t complain too much since it’s free, but claiming the breakfast is amazing would be inaccurate.

As far as other amenities, some of them are good, others not so much. There’s a pool table in the lobby as well as a hotel bar. Decent options for unwinding if you’re here on business, or need a break from the kids. The fitness center is about what you would expect (some cardio machines, some free weights). I would hesitate to get in the pool even if I was on fire. There’s a shuttle that will take you to nearby locations if you need to use it.

All things considered, the only reason I stay here is because it’s within walking distance of the office I visit every other week. The rooms are pretty good, the staff is friendly enough, and the breakfast is free, but the incredibly poor WiFi is a huge negative for me personally. Even just browsing websites is an exercise in frustration as pages time out, or your device is just disconnected from the WiFi completely. We lived at the Hyatt House in Shelton for three months while our new home was under construction. We had a one bedroom suite with a fully equipped kitchen. Our room was lovely.

Like any estaishment what really made this property unique was the staff. Starting from the General Manager to the Maintenance Engineer. These people were the most customer friendly I have ever met. Any issues I had where resolved within a super reasonable amount of time.

The hotel also serves a free breakfast daily. The food was good, but the staff was better. The kitchen staff ran lean and mean. My advice, get a dedicated host for this area who will serve as greeter and bus person.

There were three sets of cliental, the extended stay (like me); business folks and the weekenders. For the most part the weekenders were the WORSE! During the summer third party vendors had a contract with the hotel, the rooms were let at a phennominal rate, frequently under a $100.00 per night. Something odd happens to certain people when they check into a hotel for the weekend. They behave badly!!!

From excessive drinking to letting their toddler run up and down the hall way at 2:00 a.m. Note to parents... while your little Suzy may be the cutest kid on the planet, it's not the responsibly of your co-guest or hotel staff to entertain your child. Bring along a nanny if you have to, but please refrain from leaving your toddler unattended at the swimming pool. Asking a stranger to watch your kid for a minute while you run outside to grab a smoke/drink or potty break is unacceptable!

Cons: One thing to consider, the walls are paper thin, so you can hear your neighbors conversation...clearly. We were there over the summer, the air conditioning worked just fine... BUT... the noise was unbearable at times. Also because we had a suite we couldn't close the bedroom door because the living area would become unbearably warm. This seems to be a design flaw in all of the rooms.

In addition to a swimming pool the hotel sports a Jacuzzi, and fully equipped gym. The hotel also has a small laundry area with three washers and six dryers which are in desperate need of updating.

Overall this property deserves five stars because the hotel was super clean, the rooms were super clean, and most important the staff was...

I STAYED AT THIS HOTEL FOR A WEEKEND GETAWAY. THIS HOTEL WAS SO AMAZING. THEY DESERVE 5 STARS FOR THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND CLEANLINESS. UPON ARRIVAL I WAS GREETED BY AARON MILLER HE WAS GREAT WITH WELCOMING ME INTO THE HOTEL AND LETTING ME KNOW ABOUT THE HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS. THE ROOM THAT I CHOSE ONLINE WAS NOT THE ONE THAT I THOUGHT I PICKED SO HE UPGRADED ME TO THE ROOM THAT I ORIGINALLY CHOSE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

THE ROOM I HAD, CAME WITH AN AWESOME FULL KITCHEN. ( DISHWASHER, POTS, PANS, PLATES, UTENSILS, CUPS, GLASSES,ETC, AND A FULL SIZE FRIDGE... NOT THE MINI BABY FRIDGE YOU SEE IN MOST HOTELS) THERE WAS A KING SIZE BED WITH THE MOST PLUSH PILLOWS, AND THE SOFTEST SHEETS AND BLANKETS. THE LIVING ROOM SPACE IN MY ROOM WAS COMFORTABLE WITH FLAT SCREEN TV. BATHROOM WAS BIG AND THERE WAS GREAT CLOSET SPACE IN THE ROOM.

DOWNSTAIRS HAD A POOL TABLE WHICH WAS FREE MOST OF THE TIME SO YOU NEVER HAD TO WAIT ON LINE TO PLAY. THE POOL AND HOT TUB WAS A DECENT SIZE AND NEVER CROWDED. THE BREAKFAST AREA WAS WAY BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. NORMALLY CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST IS WAFFLES AND COLD CEREAL, THIS CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST HAD THE WORKS... COLD/HOT CEREAL ALL SORTS OF PASTRIES, DIFFERENT ASSORTMENTS OF BREADS, SCRAMBLED EGGS, SAUSAGES, HAM, PANCAKES, FRENCH TOAST, POTATOES, ETC... THERE WAS EVEN STAFF ON BOARD THAT MADE OMELETS FRESH TO ORDER. WITH WHATEVER YOU WANTED IN IT. YOU MADE THE ORDER AND THEY CALLED YOU WHEN IT WAS READY. I HAD ALSO DECIDED TO BRING MY OWN TEA BECAUSE MOST HOTELS ONLY CARRY LIPTON... THIS HOTEL CARRIES A GREAT ASSORTMENT OF THE TAZO BRAND COLLECTION. WHICH AGAIN TO ME WAS VERY AMAZING.

IN THE NIGHT TIME, THE FRONT DESK PERSON ON DUTY WAS ERVIN SIMMON. HE WAS VERY PLEASANT AND FRIENDLY WHILE I DID MINI SHOPPING IN THE STORE IN THE LOBBY. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT WHAT TIME I SHOULD CHECK OUT, HE OFFERED ME A LATE CHECK OUT AT 2PM NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

OK ANYWAYS LET ME STOP RAMBLING... LONG STORY SHORT. JOSUE FLEURIMOND AND CAROLYN RAFFINGTON WERE AT CHECKOUT IN THE MORNING AND THEY WERE BOTH PLEASANT PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH. OVERALL THIS HOTEL IS SUPER CLEAN (SPOTLESS) AND AMAZING AND I KNOW ITS DEFIANTLY BECAUSE OF THE AWESOME STAFF THAT THEY HAVE WORKING HERE...
