I wanted to love this place — the grounds were beautiful, and I'm sure the house took a lot of work to restore. But I will never return because of management's obscene cancellation policy — which claims they can keep your entire deposit if you cancel within a week of your stay — and the absolutely embarrassing “breakfast” of store-bought yogurt and a couple pieces of quiche. I had called two days before my trip to see if I could cancel because a tropical storm was barreling up the coast. The forecast for my area was intense wind and rain, and the forecast for Mystic was high winds, coastal flooding and an equally intense rain. I spoke to the manager, Nancy, who kindly informed me that the policy was the policy and I would lose my deposit of $250 if I canceled. I tried to argue this, saying I desperately wanted to come, but the weather forecast was both ugly and dangerous. She would not give ground — and she had the gall to tell me I was actually LUCKY because they usually demand the entire payment of more than $500 a night up-front. And had I paid that, the hotel would have kept the entire thing. She dismissed my concerns entirely, told me the general manager, Rose Mary, refused to budge, and told me to call her back when I decided what to do. So because of this ridiculous “policy,” I was forced to drive more than two hours in the torrential rains to get to the mansion. At that point, I was so angry that no amount of pleasantries from the other people who worked there – and they were very nice – could compensate. Beyond that, the promised “breakfast” was an absolute joke. A few cups of Chobani yogurt, two or three kinds of bread and a couple meager pieces of quiche. This was an absolute embarrassment, especially for a place that calls itself a bed and breakfast – and charges $500 a night. I’ve had far better selections at far cheaper hotels. I still cannot believe this place charges that much and offers so very little. All-in-all, the management here has made this beautiful mansion an unparalleled failure. Save your money and stay elsewhere – unless you like being raked over the coals by unforgiving proprietors.
EDIT: In response to their reply - yes, I had a day to figure out an exact date I could go in the future, which was impossible to coordinate given our hectic schedules. And I was told that would be non negotiable, non refundable and not able to be moved again. So beware, Dear Reader; their insulting, dismissive reply to this post is exactly the kind of garbage you can expect to encounter if you run into any unforseen difficulties on your trip! Thanks for proving my point,...

The Captain's Mansion is quite simply gorgeous. In short,... someone put way more money & care & straight-up Love into restoring it than they may ever get back out of it... It's absolutely stunning, and a really exceptional & special treat.
We had the additional good fortune of going the week before Christmas with all the lights and decorations, and having the first night completely to ourselves. The manager Nancy, who was wonderful, super-attentive & pleasant, handed us the Keys to the Palace to have to ourselves after 9:00pm when management leaves - we felt like kids in a candy store left unattended, LOL.
From start to finish it was like a dream. Our room (Captain's Suite - probably the best in the mansion) was amazing, and we basically felt like royalty. The 'enclosed widow's walk' on top of the mansion (easily accessible from 3rd floor) was so much fun with its 360-views. The 1st floor parlors, main winding stairway, & entrance area with intricate woodwork were a delight. 12 ft ceilings with cast plaster moldings and exquisite finishing throughout. Breakfast was very good, and it was so much fun to take the short walk down to the center of town to the shops and restaurants and then make our way back to our own personal mansion.
In summary, we felt bad for all the poor slobs in Mystic who stayed elsewhere that weekend. It was quite clear they screwed up, to be quite blunt.
But not us.
King & Queen, Lord & Lady,... for a weekend.

Read moreI stayed at the Captain's Mansion with my girlfriend over the Valentine's day weekend. The Building itself is amazing and exudes a sense of history that is hard to find nowadays. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly host who gave us a quick history tour of the mansion and then showed us to our room. We stayed in the Bascule Bridge suite and I couldn't recommend it more. The room was spacious, the bed was massive and comfortable and the shower/bathroom was spacious and clean. Our room also had a little balcony off of it which was lovely. We were able to enjoy watching the snow from our little balcony which only added to the experience. The hotel offered complimentary water, soda and light snacks which was a nice perk as well. The complimentary breakfast was also nice if you needed to grab a quick bite before heading out to explore Mystic. The best part about Captain's Mansion was the location. It's a quick 2-3 minute walk down to all the shops, bars and restaurants on Main Street yet is still just far enough away from all crazy hustle and bustle of main street. Hotel also offers convenient parking. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay immensely and will definitely be making it an...
