Rating: 3.5 The Grey Fox Inn is conveniently located near (walking distance) coffee shop/bakeries, a market, & restaurants. The newly renovated modernized rooms are an unexpected surprise in contrast with the Grey Fox Inn exterior. The rooms are very clean and guests may feel like they’re staying in an urban hotel though the room views are not all particularly scenic or aesthetic. To my surprise, the bed was noisy, a little too soft, and quite uncomfortable which may make sleeping a little challenging (and I’m generally a sleep-anywhere-through-anything kind of person). The bathrooms are equipped with airline-like bowls with pressure flushing ✈️ which may startle you at first, but it’s also a little loud during the night... I can even hear the flushing in other rooms. A little more effort could certainly be added to the morning breakfasts here as the selection was very basic/minimal. In general, this isn’t a bad location to stay at... I’d recommend it only if my review suits your needs. Either way, Stowe is a beautiful place to visit.

What a wonderful centrally located place to stay when in Stowe! Can walk to downtown and many restaurants nearby. All the staff were Helpful and went out of their way to be sure we had a perfect experience! I recommend you stay in the separate building where we stayed in a lovely room with kitchen stocked with all needed to cook and serve meals. Our room also had a beautiful fireplace, large smart TV, deck and view to the greens and forest behind the buildings. You could walk over to the recreation path that takes you to town and all along the Little River! There is a “Stowe Quiet Path” you can pick up from the paved rec path. All so very lovely! I walked miles while hubby went fly-fishing. After all these good workouts, I enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor pools at the Grey Fox as well as the sauna and whirlpool spa!!! And a cozy fire every am and pm! Loved, loved, loved our stay at the Grey Fox Inn!!

Horrible service. Beds are lumpy. Card locks and openkey do not work, finicky. We were locked in the indoor pool, they expected us to walk outside without shoes back into the hotel in the cold or wait for the locksmith. Ended up walking out in the cold after an hour of waiting for the locksmith. The front desk was also not very helpful, and shouted on the phone regarding the pool situation. Showers do not work properly. Also very loud, walls are paper thin. Would not stay here again. The only positive was the location and the size of the room.

Site pictures are grossly misleading and our experience was one of the worst nightmares we've ever had.

After driving six hours we were Shocked and astonished, to say the least! We booked what looked like a very nice room (with a fireplace) for over $300 a night but ended up having one of the worst hotel experiences of our lives. - I think the Ramada Inn would've been a far more better experience.

At arrival we had to wait over half hour for the front desk attendant to resolve keycards issues. The hotel wanted customers to download an app to unlock the room door but the app didn’t work and the attendant refused to give them an actual keycard and kept sending customers back to their room to keep trying to unlock the door using the app but customers kept coming back complaining they couldn’t get in their rooms. (This happened with at lease 4 customers while we stood there waiting). Not sure why handing good old keycards was an issue for this establishment, but it was a huge inconvenience for customers. When we were finally checked in and headed to our room, we were shocked to find out, that our room was located in the basement and worse than that, it had not been cleaned and it was gross! It also seem like there were no windows; so, NO fire scape in the event of one. When we went back up to the front desk to demand to get a different room, we were told they couldn’t get us a different room and that we needed to wait for housekeeping to clean our room. This was around 6:30 PM; there was no housekeeping available; so, the very rude hotel manager decided to get an employee (seemed to be sort of the grounds keeper) to clean the room; who arrived half asleep and wearing Baby Yoda pijamas. This is most unusual and was very unsettling for us and so we requested a refund and figured it would be better to pay double the money elsewhere than to ever consider sleeping in the gross/death trap room.

After arguing with the front desk attendant and manager for hours they agreed to refund us and luckily we were able to stay elsewhere at a much higher rate but at least we were able to sleep peacefully.

There is no way I can ever consider staying here. The only good thing this establishment has is an amazing graphic designer who photoshops pictures really really good as most of the pics online are...

This was hands-down the most appalling customer service experience I have ever had with any hotel, or really any establishment where customer interaction is part of the job. I have seen other reviews mentioning this particular manager, yet there has been no response from upper management. The silence speaks volumes—it makes one thing clear: they either have zero standards for how guests are treated or they outright condone this behavior. Either way, it is beyond unacceptable. Do you really want to take the chance and find out for yourself?||I needed to cancel my reservation due to unforeseen circumstances and called just four hours past their stated policy cutoff. Given that this was during a peak season, it’s almost guaranteed they could have rebooked the room. Yet instead of offering even the slightest flexibility, I was met with rudeness beyond belief. The woman I spoke with was curt, dismissive, and refused to have a discussion. When I calmly tried to explain my situation, she hung up on me. I cannot overstate how shockingly unprofessional this was—what kind of business allows staff to treat customers this way?||At that point, I accepted that they would keep my one-night deposit per their policy, so I called back and asked if we could simply modify the reservation to arrive on the second night instead. This would have allowed them to receive three nights of payment instead of just keeping the deposit, a completely logical and fair solution. They refused again. The sheer stubbornness and lack of basic hospitality sense here is mind-boggling.||My family and I visit Stowe frequently. We’ve spent years making memories in the area. Since my in-laws sold their condo, we’ve been staying in hotels and were hoping to find one to return to regularly. This will absolutely not be that place.||Between the unprofessional staff, complete disregard for customer service, and bafflingly rigid policies, this is without question the worst experience I have ever had with any hotel. And we didn't even stay there. And based on other reviews, this is not a one-time issue. If you value being treated with basic respect, book literally...

If you’re considering booking here, DON'T!! This was, without a doubt, the most appalling customer service experience I have ever had.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I needed to cancel my reservation. I called just four hours past their policy cutoff, which was set an entire week before check-in, making it absurd to think that my call just a few hours late would have made any difference to them. I understand that policies exist for a reason, but there are moments when basic human understanding should apply.

Instead, I was met with rude, hostile, and unprofessional behavior. The woman I spoke with flat-out refused to have a conversation, snapped at me, abruptly hung up, and then ignored my follow-up calls like a child throwing a tantrum. When she finally answered again, she immediately put me on hold and left me there. This was not just bad service. This was a person who seemed to take pride in being as unhelpful and rude as possible. No business should ever let someone like this represent them.

Accepting that they would keep my one-night deposit, I asked if we could adjust the four-night reservation to a three-night stay, allowing them to still receive payment for three nights instead of just the deposit. This was not an unreasonable request. It offered a way for them to enforce their policy while still accommodating a paying guest. Any business that values its guests would recognize this as an opportunity to provide basic customer service and apply common sense. Instead, they refused again, showing zero willingness to work with their guests.

What makes this worse is that I am far from the only one to experience this. Multiple reviews mention this same manager, yet upper management has done nothing. The silence speaks volumes. Either they don’t care, or they believe this is acceptable.

Save yourself the frustration. There are plenty of better hotels that actually care about and respect...
