In all my travels I’ve always wanted to spend the night in a vintage motel. The kind that’s single floor with a door that opens to the outdoors and requires a real key. After a 2-week trip through the Rockies and staying in posh Airbnb’s, I felt the perfect way to top off the trip was with a stay in an authentic motel. So, I looked up places to stay in Wall, SD and found Welsh’s Motel. My wife was initially hesitant while I was beyond stoked. After realizing I couldn’t make a reservation online I picked up the phone and gave the Welsh’s a call. Turns out I actually got to leave a message on an answering machine as Mrs. Welsh had stepped out for a minute. I promptly got a return call and got a room reserved. Upon arrival, the motel was clean and as well kept as you can imagine. Mrs. Welsh was there to meet me and check me in with a couple quick facts of who I was and a swipe of the credit card. No computer, no 25 minutes of waiting around wondering why I can’t simply get checked into a room, weird deposits, etc. Just a receipt and a literal metal key on a key chain. What a thrill! Upon parking in front of the door and entering our room, I couldn’t believe how solid it was. I was surprised at how updated it was and how amazing it made me feel. I’m a bit of a germaphobe as is my wife, but she actually commented that it was the cleanest shower she had ever seen! Whoa!!! She was won over and admitted that the Welsh motel was better than she could’ve anticipated. Perfectly located 4 blocks from Wall Drug and across the street from 3 convenience stores and a DQ, you are easily within walking distance of everything the town has to offer. Then there’s the digital speed limit sign on the backside of the motel. The kids had a blast running down the sidewalk trying to see how fast they could run. The oldest got up to 17 mph. Goodness, I could go on, but I better get off to the Badlands. What’s crazy is we paid a lot more money at a name brand chain the night before and received a nasty room in return 🤢. So to stay at a locally owned and operated motel with true nostalgic Americana feels was too good. This is what made America great! More Welsh motels please!!! I know where I’ll be staying next time I’m near Wall. Oh, a thing that did disappoint me was the fact that our room didn’t have old school paneling and a tube tv. Rather it had modern paneling and a digital tv with lots of cable channels and wifi. So really no disappoints in reality. What a valid place!!! Norm my traveling gnome really enjoyed it too and wanted a couple pics in front of the...
Read moreVery affordable allows pets $10 pet fee. No deposit. We stayed in a single bed room was very clean and smelled nice. You could tell the owner takes pride in this establishment. The bathrooms appear to be newly remodeled. There was no evidence of dust in the ceiling vents or floor heaters if that gives you an idea of the cleanliness. Often an overlooked area.
They even put in little touches of detail with mints and folding your toilet paper, which no motel I've stayed in does.
Beds were semi firm and springy. I usually sleep in a pillow top/ memory foam mattress but had no issues or discomfort waking up on this mattress. The bed m as made very nicely sheets tucked very tightly military style.
The stass was very friendly and helpful and would reccomend Welsh's to anyone traveling through with or without pets.
Last note and this was huge. They offer towels for cleaning your car, which as you can imagine drivimg through 90 get very dirty. There is an ice machine which was very helpful in stocking up our cooler free of charge to continue on our road trip. Free coffee that opens up at 8:00am. Coffee was not great, but depends on who makes it I guess as is open for use to whoever wants it.
Thank you...
Read moreBooked a queen 5 months in advance and it was waiting for us when we arrived. This is family owned place and she’s not on the big booking sites, so you just call directly and she’ll take your name and hold your room. Old school in the best possible way.||Room was clean and AC worked great. Bed was very comfortable. They offer ice, coffee and soda in a vending machine. The room had a nice, big TV.||There is no refrigerator in the room, or microwave so plan accordingly.||Her prices are about $100 less than the big chain hotel down the street, and her place is easily as nice, just without the Continental breakfast. You can get a lot of breakfast at nearby Wall Drug for $100 - just saying :-)||My only complaint, and there’s not much she can do about it, is that a couple sat under our window early in the morning talking loudly, and you can hear everything from the ice/coffee room (people drop the ice machine door with a bang, and from my room I heard it every time), as everyone passed my room (next door to vending room).||All in all a very nice stay and I will be back, so keep the...
