This hotel is a great choice for lunch or dinner, but that’s it. I would not recommend staying at this hotel at all. We recently stayed in a superior room on level 6 which was small, had a queen bed and overlooked the entry drive way on Sunset Boulevard. After checking out of this hotel, I actually believe I was given a standard room, despite booking a superior room. Being an old hotel, the windows were single glazed which means can clearly hear every car that passes the hotel. Being on the Sunset strip, burn outs, mini drag races and over-revving of engines does happen all through the night. The bathrooms and toiletries were lovely. But the fatal flaw with this hotel for me, was the mattress. It was marshmallow soft and sagged in the middle. It was not fit for a trailer park let alone a top hotel. It was honestly the worst mattress I have slept on in any hotel (or AirB&B) ever! I was so uncomfortable that after tossing and turning half way through the night with lower back pain, I gave up and slept on the floor. If you decide to stay at this hotel, you need to factor in the cost of seeing an osteopath straight after your stay. Which can become a costly exercise if you are paying upwards of AUD$700 a night for a standard room during peak periods. I think you can get to experience the hotel if you eat at the Tower Bar and Restaurant. This was a great venue, but I would recommend you book early and ask for an inside table. We arrived at 8pm and despite booking several weeks in advance, almost all of the inside tables were gone other than the table next to the reception desk. We decided to eat outdoors, but this was virtually empty and didn’t have much atmosphere. Despite being virtually empty, we were not able to sit at a table with a view as it “may be outside the boundaries” and reserved for someone else. The table service was average at best. We had the Lobster Tacos and Tuna Tartare for starters, both were delicious. My partner ordered the Tower Burger, but it was missing sliced tomato and lettuce which made it overly stodgy. I ordered the Filet Mignon which was the most expensive main on the menu at $63. I suspect it had been sitting on the pass for some time because the potatoes had gone hard and the steak was cold when it arrived. For the remainder of the meal we had to endure a photoshoot of a group of people eating their meal which is totally ironic given that the Tower Bar menu clearly states in bold that there are to be no photographs taken in the restaurant. We decided to forgo desert because of the poor service and atmosphere. The last time we were in LA, we stayed at the Viceroy hotel. While the location is not as good, the hotel was far superior in terms of service and amenities. Our room was three times the size and the bed was the next level - super king, supremely comfortable and with high quality linen. Even the Andaz directly opposite is a better option in my view. So overall, really average stay. I didn’t provide this feedback to the Sunset Tower reception staff because they didn’t care to ask about my stay. That pretty much sums up my experience...
Read moreBeing in showbiz and the art world I stay at a lot of hotels from basic to upscale. This time I was on a staycation. No business just relaxation. I’ve been to this hotel before when it was the Argyle prior to Mr Klein purchasing and restoring it and have been as a guest of clients and friends during award show season since he took ownership . However this was my first time staying here on my own accord. Let’s get to the details… my room was on the 12th floor and had an outdoor terrace with amazing views reaching all the way from West Hollywood to Los Feliz (you can see the Griffith Park observatory from there) to DTLA, and century city. I booked one of the suites I believe it was the premiere suite. Nice size living room with floor to ceiling windows… every room in my suite had a gorgeous view of the city. There was a dining table with 4 comfortable leather chairs in a corner of the room that had romantic lighting and some kind of rich beautiful wood on the walls. (the area where the dining table was gave me old mobster vibes ! Which I love!) The dining area reminded me of Chasen’s which was one of my fav restaurants that no longer exists but if you’ve been to Chasen’s then you know the vibe. I’m a soak in a bath kind of woman and darling let me tell you the bathtub in my room was heavenly! Had to be at least 3 feet deep and wide enough for 2 if that’s your type of fun lol. There was a window in the shower overlooking Sunset Blvd and beyond. As a writer/film maker I need those types of mental escapes to allow my mind to wander. Not only is the view and bathtub amazing , they also provide you with tea candles and bath salts for an extra relaxing vibe! I have super sensitive skin and the bath products were high quality and did not break me out or make me itch! About the mini bar: The full size bottles of premixed drinks are a lovely added touch . I’m very picky about my liquor and I think the drinks were perfect. The food is very good. We ordered room service several times during our stay and they were quick to bring the food and very nice and accommodating . Actually everyone who works there is kind and friendly but one person stands out and that is Dimitri (I hope I spelled it right). He is a young man with an old soul. A gentleman and a scholar as my grandpa would say :) Dimitri makes everyone feel important. He’s warm and inviting and goes the extra mile. I feel like he exemplifies what this kind of hotel stands for. Thanks Dimitri and the rest of the team at the Sunset Tower Hotel for making our stay one to remember . To the owner Mr Klein , as a member of the Los Angeles conservancy I’d like to thank you for breathing new life into a building that is home to so much show biz history. A building that is a star in its own right architecturally speaking. Your design elements are perfect … stepping into the hotel guests seem to travel back to a time when everything was just a lil more glamorous. Thank you from the bottom of my heart....
Read moreI checked out of Sunset Tower this morning after what started as a great stay but ended in a frustrating and disappointing experience. What was meant to be a relaxing celebration for my 30th birthday turned into a night that left me feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable.
I booked a king suite for for my partner and I. At check-in, we were warmly welcomed by Megan and the front desk team and even upgraded to a Premier Suite. The hospitality and service during the day was exceptional, and I was genuinely looking forward to the rest of our stay.
That night, around 8pm, four friends met us at Tower Bar for some martinis before we went out for the evening. We intended to go up to the suite briefly before leaving (30 minutes max), but at the elevator lobby were stopped by a food and beverage manager (a blonde woman with a top knot) who accused us of not being guests at the hotel. I explained to her that we were guests and gave her our room number. We were then told there was a strict four-person guest limit in rooms, even in the large (massive) suites
Respecting the policy, three of our group went upstairs while I stayed downstairs with the others. A few minutes later, I returned to the suite and was shocked to find that hotel security had been sent up to our room to “check” on us, without cause, without complaint, and with no disturbance whatsoever. We were not being loud, disruptive, or violating any policies. I was told that the security team even appeared uncomfortable and confused when they realized there were, in fact, only three guests in the room, and nothing inappropriate was happening.
The entire situation felt accusatory, excessive, and frankly, discriminatory. We are a more diverse group than the typical Sunset Tower clientele, and it’s hard not to feel like we were treated with unnecessary suspicion and bias because of that. To make matters worse, the two friends who stayed back at the bar had a drink spilled on them by a bartender who offered no meaningful apology.
When we checked out the next morning, we shared the experience with Megan, who was again kind and professional. She apologized and acknowledged that the woman who confronted us had overstepped. She did what she could and offered a $50 credit, which was a kind and thoughtful thing to do, but now feels like a small gesture given how upsetting and inappropriate the situation was.
Living in LA, we have SO many great hotel options to choose from, but I chose Sunset Tower because it is a special place. However, while the front desk staff were lovely, the way we were treated by management and security left a strong lasting impression for all the wrong reasons. Hospitality is about trust, care, and respect. I haven’t felt this mistreated in a long time, let alone on such an important day. I am extremely disappointed and would like to share this experience...
