This B&B is basically right at the east end of the Williamsburg historic district. It's a few minutes walk to get to Campbell's Tavern. It's located on a fairly quiet street on a good sized plot with parking behind the home. We stayed in the Alexander Spotswood room. The wide angle photo on their website doesn't do it justice. It's a huge suite with a screened porch and a bathroom with a shower that's larger than a cheap hotel room in London. Mr. Lake brings breakfast up to your room--and that meal was excellent. There is a fireplace and candles in the room. Very romantic place. We really enjoyed our two night stay. The suite was clean and supplied with nice soaps, towels, and extra pillows. All the photos I posted are in the suite. The entire home is filled with interesting antiques and decor. There were signs of needed maintenance outside, but that didn't affect our fun. Only downside was the mattress, which was a very firm king. If we stay again, I will ask if the other rooms have a softer bed. So we would definitely recommend Governor's Trace. When the owners/innkeepers retire, I hope the next people will be as professional and keep this B&B at the same level. There is wifi there. It worked fine for me, but I mention it only because one other review actually gave one star based on phone reception! Dude, set your phone for wifi enabled calling. Geez, some people need a broader perspective. If you find this review helpful, please say so.

We had a wonderful few days at this B&B. Mr. Lake is very kind and friendly. He also makes one mean breakfast. We got to choose when breakfast was brought up to our room, which consisted of a pot of coffee, glasses of orange juice, and whichever delicious breakfast Mr. Lake cooked for us that day. The location is excellent, as you can walk right into Old Colonial Williamsburg from the property. The B&B is well maintained overall, though we did not take advantage of the books in the common space downstairs we both enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Left for Colonial Williamsburg today and there had been a room mix up with the dates so I needed a place to stay tonight. So I found a nice looking B&B with an available room and booked it. The Governor’s Trace B&B.||||Website took my credit card information and at no point said anything about any limitations.||||Upon arriving after a near 6 hour drive the owner did not know about our booking. Claimed he had not received one. When I showed him the email with the booking information he then contradicted his original story by saying that he sent me an email stating that one night bookings on the weekend were not acceptable. ||||When I told him I had not received an email he became belligerent and said that on the booking rules on the website it states that one night stays on weekends are not accepted. AT NO POINT during the booking process does the website direct you to this page or provide you with that information. Looking at the website after the fact, the information about booking restrictions is on there but at no point during the booking process are you sent to that page or informed of any restrictions, you’d have to stumble upon it yourself. It also says that they don’t allow kids. If the restrictions had been mentioned at any point, I obviously would not have made the booking.||||When I proceeded to point out that he had my credit card information he responded that he had not charged the card (although there is nothing to stop him from now doing so, and given his lying and belligerence it's hard to trust that the information is secure).||||When I informed him that he needed to fix his website booking procedures because the website booking procedure are apparently broken (I believe I used the word awful) he became even more aggressive, proceeded to insult me in front of my 10 year old son, unnecessarily calling me an “awful person” (at least he didn’t cuss in front of the kid, I suppose) and made us leave.||||At no point up until then did I raise my voice. I simply wanted to work out what had gone wrong with the booking process, make sure I hadn’t been charged and see if there was a solution to the error.||||Not a way to run a business or to act as a reasonable human being and, shocked and bewildered at the unwarranted treatment, I did point out that he was behaving like a “horrible human being” (mindful of my kid, those were my exact words and I raised my voice only enough to be heard through the closing door). The behavior we were met with was unwarranted, unprovoked and absolutely shocking.||||There are plenty of great places to stay in Williamsburg. Avoid this one like the plague if you’re ever there unless you enjoy being insulted by a belligerent old man with a broken booking website who takes your credit card information without...

I highly recommend not staying here while in the Williamsburg area. I am an avid traveler and also owner of a short term rental business in NC so I know what this business should look like and Governor’s trace is far below industry standards and expectations. The gentlemen who operates the business is stuck in generations past and therefore does not cultivate a positive or quite frankly safe atmosphere for guests of diverse backgrounds. Myself and two of my close friends were in town only for the weekend and he was extremely abrasive, pushy and down right rude. He overstayed his welcome in one of my friends rooms the entire time his partner was showering and his partner had to say “I’m naked in here” before the man would leave. He also walked in on my wife while she was changing because he was so adamant about knowing when she wanted breakfast. He accosted all three of us about payment the morning after we checked in and even partly denied entry until we paid. We had booked this place a year before we visited so I informed him that we still had another night and could settle payment at check out time, because I wasn’t sure if I had already paid in full or not but he was so pushy that even though I requested a few minutes to change and go through my credit card statements, he came knocking at the door less than 3 minutes later and tried to push his way into the room despite me not even being fully changed yet. This made me angry so I said “I need a couple of seconds” and he had the audacity to literally start counting me down. Never in my life have I been so disrespected as a customer and this is only the tip of the ice berg with our weekend here. All of us felt so uncomfortable here that we made it a point to stay away from the house as long as possible to avoid interacting with him. We each paid handsomely for just a weekend here and it’s unacceptable how he acted and treated us. I tried to calmly address the issues we were having and he walked away from me mid sentence. This man should not be...
