So I actually didn’t mind my stay here. The staff is very nice. The bed itself was clean enough, and when the fan stopped working in my bunk, someone was happy to fix it immediately. People are loud, but that’s not the fault of the hostel. There are two bathrooms in a mix 12 person room, so everyone can hear you shower, pee and fart. The floors are constantly wet, but this is also very common in South East Asia. The location is very central and there’s a lot of great spots near by to eat. The big park that feels like a 24/7 merry-go-round is also very near by.
My biggest qualm about the place was the issue I had when trying to change dates. Some of it could be my fault, but it could have also been solved by the hostel and they refused to. Up to you, I just provide the information,
I booked this place for 7 nights through Agoda. I wanted to then change the dates just one day, and the only way I could change was to cancel. So I canceled the stay and then re-booked. Because I was within the time frame that I couldn’t cancel, I was charged for the full 7 days. I had already rebooked my stay for 6 nights before I noticed this. I was pretty upset because now I was charged 13 nights but was only staying 6 nights. I understand if I hadn’t rebooked, but I was still staying there. I called Agoda, and they told me the hostel refused to refund on their end. I contacted the hostel, and they said they were not willing to give me a refund.
Maybe it was a mistranslation via language barrier. Maybe they’re greedy. Either way it left a bad taste...

As someone in my late forties, I wasn’t sure if staying in a hostel would be the right fit for me. Any uncertainty I had was immediately put to rest upon arrival. Linh, the incredible host, welcomed me with such warmth and enthusiasm, guiding me through how everything worked and making me feel completely at ease.
Beyond just the accommodation, Linh went above and beyond in helping me plan my travels around northern Vietnam. She took the time to understand my availability and arranged guided tours accordingly. Even after I had left the hostel, when my plans changed, a simple message to Linh was all it took—she adjusted everything seamlessly, as if I’d unlocked some hidden advantage in the system!
What truly sets this place apart is that it became more than just a hostel—it became my travel base. With multiple layovers here between adventures, I always knew I had a familiar and reliable place to return to. Whether it was organizing transport, planning excursions, or simply offering a comfortable and welcoming space, Linh ensured I had everything I needed.
Having now experienced how great a hostel stay can be, I realize how lucky I was to start my journey here. If I’d encountered some of the other hostels first, I might have been discouraged—but this experience has completely changed my perspective.
For those looking for not only a comfortable place to stay but also outstanding service and travel support, I cannot recommend this hostel...
Read moreMy experience with this hostel was quite complicated. I stayed here for 1 night and decided to plan a trip to Sapa and Ha Giang with the staff. They made me a plan and after some considerations I took it and paid. The plan also included a discounted price for a bed of 160,000 VND once I come back. The trip went ok, although not without flaws (I got a sleeper instead of a cabin from Sapa to Ha Giang and neither I nor the bus staff knew which my hostel was which created a very stressing and awkward situation on arrival which made me call my coordinator at 1AM). But overall it was ok and I highly recommend Hong Hao for the Ha Giang loop. As I arrived back to Hanoi today at 3AM, I walked back to the hostel expecting there'd be a bed ready for me. The guy at the reception wasn't prepared for my arrival but he offered me a bed in their other hostel (right in front of luxury backpackers) for 180,000 VND, I explained to him my coordinator and I agreed upon 160,000 a night and we just agreed I'd sort it out and pay upon checkout. At around 4AM my coordinator sent me an angry message as if no such agreement was made and that I put her in trouble. I explained to her that all i wanted is a bed until the 1st of April for the agreed upon price. She on the other hand decided that she'd rather pay for my night herself and send me away to find another place. After realizing she just wants me out of the hostel I just said ok and booked another hostel. This left a very bitter taste in my mouth and I cannot recommend...
