We have visited the famous Lai Kei Ice Cream shop a few times over the years. Generally speaking, their ice-cream is very soft and tastes just ok. However, its very cheap and sort of nostalgic trying old places like this.
Lai Kei Ice Cream has been around since the 1960s and sell lollis, ice-cream sandwiches and homemade ice-cream scoops pretty much the same way they have for decades.
Having a bit of space for dessert after a great lunch nearby, we decided to stop here for a quick ice-cream recently. We tried four scoops, serving size is quite small and ice-cream texture is dry and slightly chalky, a bit like homemade ice-cream that we found decades back. To be honest, we didn't enjoy the texture so much, having a preference for creamy, smooth ice-cream instead. As for the flavours, we thought the coffee and peppermint flavours were nice, the chocolate was light in sweetness and the coconut was foreign and strange. In the end, the ice-cream scopes were ok but did feel pricey considering the tiny size of the scoops (rating 3 of 5).
Overall, a fun experience if you are wanting to visit on historical grounds to see an ice-cream shop that hasn't changed much in 50 years. Might suggest trying their ice-cream sandwiches and lollis and not their individual ice-cream scoops. In the end, Lai Kei Ice Cream is sort of a fun stop to make but not something we do regularly when visiting Macau.
