This spot has a cozy charm to it that draws u in . People who are familiar with New Market and the entrance of Oberoi grand then it will not be a treasure hunt while finding this place .
Rusticity at its peak. Sculpted pictures of old kolkata hanging on the wall, with high ceiling fans. We placed our orders for 330 ml beers but the waiter informed that none of the 330ml beers are available only 650 ml can be provided , 'twas a bummer. However we went for 1 kingfisher strong and 1 tuborg smooth. While ordering from the food menu again was disappointed when we asked for the chicken ala kiev and our order was turned down due to unavailability hence had to go for chicken 65 which they serve 12 decent pieces accompanied with capsicum, bell peppers & onions. It had a real kick to it. The price was 375/- The beers cost 330/- each.
Cleanliness of this place can be a slight sore to an eye, there's a smoking room available and while being there we're accompanied with a humongous rat . The smoking room is attached to the washroom that's also a bit dispiriting .
The food was good , we were given a bowl of potato chips along with the beers , waiting time was fair, ambience is 7/10.
2 types of dining are offered one AC and another Non AC . We sat in the Non AC and didn't feel uncomfortable. Unless it's unbearably hot outside and u r entering drenched in sweat then the non AC is comforting enough
Bill came down to 1126/-...

Located in the prime area of Kolkata Esplanade, beside the Grand Hotel, this place embodies the nostalgia of retro Kolkata. The behavior of some staff members and the service here are also excellent.
Fish Liver Gin @ Rs.385 (5/5) Recommended by their staff member, Mr. Firoz, this dish stands out in a sea of bars that serve only a few pieces as starters while charging a premium. It was a full meal, featuring sautéed veggies, fresh fish with a batter fry coating, mild spices, and a flavorful sauce—super delicious!
I also tried their Drums of Heaven and Chicken Kasturi Kebab, which were both quite average. Food and drinks prices are quite average.
This place may not be ideal for the sweltering summer days of Kolkata, but it's definitely worth a visit on a rainy or cool day and I'm...
Read moreI was growing tired of Olypub, their overpriced drinks, their decreasing portion size, their waiters hassling for tips, and wanted to find an alternative in the same area. This place caught my eye, and I went there late last year. Since then, the Cathay Bar has become my regular haunt. Their drinks are relatively cheap (about 30-40 rupees less compared to pubs in Park Street) and their servers are well behaved. They never ask for tips - in this day and age that has to be considered a rarity! Food quality is surprisingly good - I have tried their Chelo Kebab, Grilled Fish and many other dishes. They have separate sections for AC and non-AC. I always sit in the non-AC section, which is well ventilated and never feels hot. They have an old-world charm, with paintings and high ceilings reminding you of old Calcutta. I have gone solo, and with friends. Always I left feeling good. Hope they keep up with...
