This is the remarkable chapel with the Church of St. Louis of the French Church where you can see the masterpiece cycle by Caravaggio known as the Life of St. Matthew (1599-1600).It is a highlight place to visit if you enjoy Caravaggio and want to see some of his works here in Rome. These are the world famous 'The Calling', 'The Inspiration' and The Martydom' of St. Matthew. Expect a small crowd of art lovers and curious other tourists most of the time at this particular chapel. There is a coin operating machine which is fairly regularly fed by tourists wishing to illuminate the masterpieces so that nice pictures can be taken.

Sin tratta della Cappella più visitata della chiesa, anche se è di piccole dimensioni, è la 5° a sinistra, è conosciuta anche come Contarelli, dal nome del cardinale francese che la acquistò nel 1565. Il lavoro iniziale che comprendeva le due tele laterali, venne commissionato dal Cardinal Del Monte, con i temi da raffigurare (le storie di San Matteo) e il rigore religioso derivante dall’iconografia dell’epoca. Il lavoro doveva essere concluso entro l’Anno Santo del 1600 e il Caravaggio vi dipinse i due bellissimi quadri olio su tela, i quali furono le sue prime opere pubbliche e dove per la prima volta si cimentò con quadri di grandi dimensioni (oltre tre metri), in seguito gli venne commissionata anche la terza tela per l’altare, finalizzata nel 1602, l’elenco delle opere è il seguente: A sinistra “La vocazione di San Matteo”, a destra “Il martirio di San Matteo”, al centro “San Matteo e L’angelo”.

Esperaba poder ir hace mucho! En otras oportunidades traté de entrar y nunca llegaba con los horarios. Esta vez chequee bien (cierran unas horas al mediodía) y fui con tiempo. La disfruté muchísimo, lloré tanto de emoción! Es increíble! Pude tomarme mi tiempo para disfrutar las 3 obras, eran mucho más grande de lo que me esperaba. La iglesia es maravillosa.

Esperaba poder ir hace mucho! En otras oportunidades traté de entrar y nunca llegaba con los horarios. Esta vez chequee bien (cierran unas horas al mediodía) y fui con tiempo. La disfruté muchísimo, lloré tanto de emoción! Es increíble! Pude tomarme mi tiempo para disfrutar las 3 obras, eran mucho más grande de lo que me esperaba. La iglesia es maravillosa.
