Iconic and Beautiful, Just Go Prepared for the Crowds The sea of thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain is every bit as breathtaking as the photos suggest. Walking through the initial, densely packed tunnels of gates feels truly magical and otherworldly. It’s an iconic Kyoto experience for a reason, and seeing it in person is something special. The shrine complex itself is beautiful, and the atmosphere, especially as you begin to climb, is very peaceful. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is almost entirely down to the sheer volume of people. The first quarter of the trail can be incredibly congested, making it difficult to get a clear photo or to just soak in the atmosphere without being jostled along. It can feel more like a queue than a spiritual hike at peak times. My advice: GO EARLY in the morning (before 8 am) or later in the afternoon. More importantly, don't give up at the first crowded section! The further you climb the mountain path, the more the crowds thin out, and the more serene and rewarding the experience becomes. The smaller sub-shrines and viewpoints higher up are wonderful. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be prepared for a proper, rewarding hike. Don't get me wrong, this place is beautiful, historic, and unique but it makes sardine cans look spacious. There are a ton of tourists. You can get a little more breathing room if you show up before 10 am, or if you're really hardcore it is serene at like 6 am. For me, cowards are a part of traveling and don't bother me too much.
