It's a nice place but honestly I felt like a number that they just wanted to push through.
You're kind of rushed in (unless it's a quiet time which I'm not sure there ever is) and they start doing your hair right away. I understand there is a language barrier and everyone has different types of hair but I honestly wish I had a picture of how she originally did my hair, it was terrible. To start, she was literally ripping through it to part it (which was basically 2 hair styles in one). My hair was so frizy (she had hair spray but didn't use it)
I asked if they could redo it and they said "only if we have enough time". That really bothered me because it's not cheap and as mentioned at the beginning you really feel rushed through.
They are nice, bit almost like a fake customer nice which is annoying at some point. Anyway, I ended up redoing my own hair but it really tainted the overall experience for me. The tea ceremony has a nice meaning but it was also a bit awkward, to the point that it's almost uncomfortable because of the way the questions were asked. Overall, I wouldn't chose them again. I'm sure you can find something better around the city where you actually feel like a customer and not a number, there is certainly no shortage of options.
I see there reviews are all 5 stars, but not many recent ones. Maybe my expectations were too high but definitely a great...
Read moreIt's not worth the money you pay for. Very limited selections for men who are around 6' tall. You only have handful choices of solid color kimono's, no designs. My wife said she had more choices, but not a lot of options either and basically got what she could before anyone else. Her hair wasn't done properly, and kept falling off and needed more pins to keep it up. Had to ask another kimono shop to help fix her hair.. Whole process felt very rushed, expect to be with 3-4 others when you're fitting. Do not leave your valuables in the black bag they provide you with, as they could get lost. I only had my socks in there, so it wasn't a huge deal but to come back to a missing bag wasn't a great experience. The lady did find my socks in the end though. On the way to our temple, there were several shops that charged only half of what we paid, but the entire shop was full of kimonos to choose from, rather than a handful of rack we were provided. I sadly cannot recommend this...
Read moreIt was my first time in Japan, so I wanted to really dive into the culture. I love green tea and I've been wanting to wear a kimono. And so I was researching and stumbled upon Maikoya. I chose the Tea Ceremony with Kimono experience. The place was easy to find, just use Google maps. And you can't miss the decorative entrance. We were greeted warmly and then we got to choose any of their beautiful kimono and bag. They'll also style your hair and you get to choose from their wide variety of colorful hair accessories. Then you'll head upstairs and experience the tea ceremony. You can sit comfortably, even crossed-legged. My friend and I learned a lot! It was a very culturally fulfilling experience. Then afterwards the Tea Master took our pictures and then you're given time to take pictures with their background and props. 😁 They even give you a selfie stick tripod to use. 😁 I totally recommend booking any activity...
