The booking process for a 1-hour Kintsugi experience lacked crucial details. Despite requesting the specific duration a month in advance, we were simply informed of a class available at 3 pm on our desired date. After booking the 1 hour session online and providing an email confirmation of the purchase per your request (why can't you see the purchased class?), we attended the session at the specified time. While the explanation of Kintsugi was thorough, we were surprised to learn at the end that the cups needed four weeks to dry, contrary to our expectation of taking them home. Although shipping of the teacups was promised, almost six weeks later, nothing had arrived in the US.
Upon inquiry, we were informed that we had actually participated in a 2-hour class and were now being asked to pay the difference. Furthermore, crucial details like participant addresses were overlooked and requested yet again. The reason we wanted the 1-hour class was because it was to include the teacups to be brought home with the gold (the whole point of this experience for our case) Only one participant received the promised teacups without completion, leaving the rest without souvenirs. Even after receiving the shipment, the Kintsugi set that was purchased to finish the teacups was missing, necessitating yet another round of communication.
This experience was disappointing, especially considering the premium price paid and the anticipation of a high-quality Japanese cultural experience. As the tour leader, I found it disheartening to relay these issues to participants. I hope this feedback helps improve your processes to prevent similar incidents for...
Read moreWhen my friends and I decided to take a trip to Japan, I knew immediately I wanted to learn more about kinstugi and began my research. After weighing many options in Tokyo and Kyoto--I luckily decided to book an hour course with our instructor Kiki. The whole studio was quaint and located in a peaceful Kyoto neighborhood. Once there, we were greeted by our instructor and began the course. Over the course of an hour we learned about the art of kinstugi and had each step explained to us before she patiently guided us through the very last step to apply the gold finish on the cracks of our very own pottery pieces. As foreigners, we appreciated her use of English with us, but it was her love of the craft that really made the experience special.
The studio itself has many options at different durations and price points--making it accessible for anyone's trip. Plus, kinstugi kits for purchase in person or online to continue the craft yourself. Overall, wonderful experience and...
