案内板： 八島社殿 祭神は東寺の地主神とも、大己貴神（おおなむちのかみ）とも言われる。八島社と言うのはわが国を大八洲瑞穂国（おおやしまみずほのくに）と言うところから起こった社号である。それゆえこの社は東寺以前より鎮座されており、弘法大師はこの神の夢想を被ってここに伽藍建立に先立ち、この神へ寺門造立成就、方位安全、法道繁盛の祈願をされ、地主神とあがめられたと伝えられる。

注：大己貴神は大国主命 (おおくにぬしのみこと) のことです。大国主命は日本最古の歴史書「古事記（こじき）」・日本最古の正史「日本書紀（にほんしょき）」によると須佐之男命（すさのおのみこと）の六世の孫で、日本国を創った神とされています。また出雲国造（いずものくにのみやつこ）の祖神、出雲大社（いずもたいしゃ）の祭神ともされています。
