Mostly local Japanese dining here. Only my wife and I together with another caucasian couple dine on the second floor. The rest and on the first floor are local Japanese. Very homely feel as the place is run by a family. We reached at about 3.30pm to do a 7pm reservation.

We asked the young sister in the family what type of tofu she likes and what sake goes well with our food. Literally we ordered stuff that are recommended. We spent about 4800 Yen in total.

The fried rice is yummy (coming from a Cantonese wok hey person, although not much wok hey the taste is great). Tofu not bad. Nice oden and egg plant.

This place is way better than other tourist dining spots and is authentic home feeling. Anyone...

It was our pleasure to dine at Taroya as the last meal of our Japan trip - emblematic of the best of Kyoto cuisine and hospitality. We got the potato salad, eggplant, fried tofu stuffed with bonito flakes, seasonal tempura, rice in tea with mentaiko, cucumber with plum sauce, japanese omelette… every single item was stellar. But a SPECIAL shout-out to the stir fried oysters in butter and soy sauce. It was the most delectable oyster we’ve ever had. Thank you to the staff and chefs for such a...

Chose this restaurant to try Obanzai, the traditional Kyoto-style Japanese tapas.

The food did not disappoint. The meatball, karaage, and croquette were the highlights. Sashimi was decent, though one piece (mackerel) tasted a bit fishy for me.

Next time if I had the chance to revisit, I should order more vegetable-based dishes, which are the essence of Obanzai.

There is a minimum order of one drink per person. From 8pm onwards, smoking is allowed indoors, as the staff...

We found this place by accident after another was full, and left with no regrets. Taroya is evidently well-liked by the locals, and we were the only non-Japanese in this packed izakaya. The regular menu does have an English version, but their daily specials are listed only in Japanese. The grilled squid was really fresh, and the ochazuke (tea over rice, with salmon in our case) a refreshing end to a day in Kyoto
