This hotel is aweful! The staff are very rude, not accommodating at all and poorly trained. We booked a room for 2 people, with 2 beds. It was an accident and I meant to boot 3 people. When I tried to explain this, the clerk said that was unacceptable. I asked why and she just said it’s not allowed. Why? An explanation would have been nice! We went around in circles with the clerk for about ten minutes on getting an extra NONSMOKING room for our third guest. The price was inconsistent and she kept trying to put us in a smoking room even after we stated that I have health problems and can’t have a smoking room.

After this mess, she didn’t charge us for the correct number of stays, but assured us that it would be ok (we’ll see).

The rooms are small and old! The bathrooms have mold and leak when taking a bath! The beds are super stiff and I couldn’t sleep well! The A/C had no instructions (the other vote we stayed in gave clear explanations on how to use it).

When you leave the property, you have to turn in your key (it’s a legit key, not a card, so there’s only one per room). When you come back, you just state your room number and they give you the key. That’s it! No I.D checks, even when there’s a staff change!

This hotel is not safe and not worth the price! I have stayed in motels nicer than this!! I booked through an agency, I couldn’t get a refund.

Steer clear of this hotel!! There are many others in the area!!

Update! How does a hotel run out of pillows?? We requested an extra pillow per person, like we did the night before, and was told “1 pillow per person”. How is that right? The other night when we asked, there was no problem! Now that I ask, it’s a huge problem! Consistency is key!

This “hotel” is by far the worst I’ve ever stayed in! Horrible service! I thought the people here were kind, this...

First of all don't get fooled by how nice the hotel looks on the outside. Although the hotel looks pretty, it is not my nicest stay in Japan, maybe my worst so far.

Hotel amenities (4/5) : you get a ticket for a free drink but have to drink it in the hotel basement from 7pm to 10pm, we ended up not using them because we were never at the hotel at these times.

At the entrance you can help yourself to razors toothbrushs and other little stuff. Towels and slippers were provided in the hotel room. There is also a wall of stuff to do on Kyoto which was my favourite part of the hotel.

The room (0/5) : The ledge at the entrance of the room was so close to the door that I would inevitably bump on it every time I entered the room and that was just the beginning. The double bed was not indeed a double but what I would call a 4 quarters, as in 4 square pieces of mattress joined together by a belt and a sheet and placed on a 5 cm high bedframe (if you can even call it that). To get even worse, those pieces of mattress were all framed in metal giving you the displeasure of sleeping with a huge metal rod going across your back as well as between you and your partner.

We found a cockroach in the room, which might have entered by accident but when trying to check if it was the only one we discovered that no one had cleaned under the bed or the furniture in a while. Dust, old slippers and plastic wraps were piling up in front of us, no second cockroach though.

Location (4/5): If you which to be located around this street, note that there are quite a few other hotels neaby. Granted, I haven't tried them but I have tried this one and...

Cliff notes since it’s a long one: room is dirty!

The worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. It’s a very deceiving hotel. The location is great, the outside and lobby look amazing…but our room was disgusting. It made us wonder if anyone actually cleaned anything??

Mold is growing from behind the wallpaper, tatami filled with stains, outlets broken, and the bathroom was worse than a public one!

During check in, the staff warns you about the step up into the bathroom and to be careful leaving it. It’s deceivingly large. You literally have to jump out and with the tatami mat step down directly across, it is extremely dangerous.

I’ve never seen a hotel bathroom in this condition. Absolutely disgusting. Everywhere you look, chances there is mold. The toilet seat doesn’t even match the toilet so, when you sit to pee, it shoots out. Gross! It was so horrible, no one wanted to use it. We would rather go across the street to Family Mart.

The first night, the family woke up to sore throats. I didn’t think anything of it, but now I’m pretty sure it’s from all the mold. I really wish we could leave, unfortunately, the hotel makes you pay for the whole stay upfront. Our stay for 2 nights was was too expensive to leave.

Bottom line, I’ve stayed in a Motel 6 cleaner than this place. Not worth the price! Not worth your health. There are definitely better places to stay in Kyoto that is clean...

Dangerous bathroom Step Down – Potential for Injury I stayed at the En Hotel Kyoto and unfortunately, I had a dangerous experience that I believe future guests should be aware of. After stepping out of the bathroom, I found myself facing a step-down of about 24 cm and there’s an additional 6 cm height difference creating a total drop of 30 cm. This gap is very easy to miss, especially if you're not expecting it, and I ended up spraining my ankle when I accidentally stepped into it. I spoke with the hotel manager about the issue, but they insisted that the building code was up to standard and that nothing could be done. However, I suspect the building code might not actually address this kind of safety concern, as it seems like a serious tripping hazard to me. After looking at other reviews, I noticed that another guest had injured her knee in the same area, though she still gave the hotel a 4-star rating. Personally, I can’t understand why she didn’t rate the hotel lower, given the clear safety risk this step presents. If you're considering staying here, please be cautious of this gap. It could lead to a serious injury, and I strongly advise anyone to be extra careful when stepping out of the bathroom.
