Description version: Important Cultural Property "Sugimoto Residence" (main house, Okura, Sumizo, Nakazo) Name: Masaru "Sugimoto Family Garden" The Sugimoto family founded a kimono dealer in Karasumaru Shijo Shimoru under the name of "Naraya" in 1743, and moved to the present location in 1767. It prospered as a "Kyoto merchant with a store in another country" who purchases Kyoto kimono and sells it in the Kanto region. The current main building was rebuilt after the great fire of the first year of the Genji era (1864), and according to the building tag, it was built on April 23, 1870. At this time, the head of the family was the 6th Shinzaemon, and the masters were Risaburo Hishiya and Goraemon Omiya. The main building is a front house style that connects the store section facing the front street and the living room section on the back with the entrance. The Kyo-lattice, Oto, Inuyarai, and the earth-painted windows on the second floor are all old-fashioned, typical flat-lattice appearances. As a townhouse, it is a large scale Sao in the city. It features a tatami room with a floor and shelves for each one and a half, a Buddhist altar that overhangs to the west as an independent building, and a large kitchen. It is well preserved and has extremely high value as an architectural remains of a large store in Kyoto. It is said that the Okura, Sumizo, and Nakazo, which are lined up in a key shape near the north of the main building, were built in the Edo period and were left unburned by the great fire of Genji. At the time of Gion Matsuri, the space between the shops will be a decoration place for Hakugayama in our town. After being designated as a tangible cultural property of Kyoto City (designated on February 20, 1990), the Sugimoto Residence was designated as a national important cultural property again in 2010. At that time, the land was also targeted for preservation, and as materials related to the construction of the main building, there was a "building tag" (April 1897) and a "book of books for the main house" (February 3rd year of Meiji). , "Old rice brewery" and "Old pickle hut" Takafence "were designated as the ones that convey the transition of the mansion. In addition, the "garden" in this building was designated as a national scenic spot for the first time as a "Kyomachiya garden". This scenic spot designation range includes the "street garden" that extends indoors, which is a characteristic of Machiya, such as "store garden" and "running garden", as well as "zashiki garden", "open-air garden", and "buddha garden". This is characterized by the addition of a "garden" as a work place that is indispensable to daily life, in addition to the view or garden that is seen in the conventional designation. June 29, 2010 Designated as an important cultural property February 7, 2011, designated as a scenic spot

The outer wall is also considerably damaged. For maintenance, I would like to do crowdfunding and see it...

Amazing amazing amazing! Not always open so check the hours first. Unfortunately one can't visit every corner of the house but the main house with saw with some of the garden was beautiful and very well kept. As many old houses has burned down, it is not often tou get to see an authentic Machiya as old as Sugimoto's house. A must see...
