Maruetsu (マルエツ 新宿六丁目店) is a practical, no-nonsense Tokyo grocery store that keeps it clean, spacious, and efficient. Prices aren’t the most competitive, and selection feels modest compared to countryside chains like Aeon or Universe—but it’s dependable and well-suited for local urban life. 4/5 – Unremarkable, but reliably good.

Full Review: Maruetsu (マルエツ 新宿六丁目店) is a solid example of what a neighborhood grocery store should be in a city like Tokyo—clean, understated, and refreshingly free of flash or clutter. It doesn’t try to be something it’s not. No outrageous sales banners screaming for attention, no overloaded product stacks threatening to topple at any moment. Just orderly aisles, well-lit spaces, and a clear layout designed to get you in and out without fuss.

What it lacks in wow factor, it makes up for in function and flow. There’s ample room to navigate without the claustrophobia often found in central Tokyo shops. The store isn’t sprawling by any means, but you’re not constantly bumping shoulders either—a small luxury in this part of the city.

That said, this isn’t the kind of store to travel for. It’s a “local’s market” through and through, and the product range reflects that. You’ll find all the essentials: fresh produce, meats, frozen meals, basic household goods. Nothing exotic, nothing niche. And for those of us who’ve grown fond of the sheer scale and value of suburban powerhouses like Aeon or Universe, Maruetsu’s more restrained size and price points might leave us wishing for more. It’s not the cheapest, nor does it carry particularly premium or specialty goods—but it covers the bases, reliably.

Still, context matters. This is Tokyo. Land is limited, and real estate comes at a premium. With that in mind, Maruetsu delivers a clean and comfortable shopping experience tailored for urban living. For quick grocery runs, casual weekly shopping, or filling your fridge with dependable staples, this branch performs admirably.

Final Score: 4/5 Maruetsu 新宿六丁目店 is the grocery store equivalent of a good pair of walking shoes—nothing fancy, but dependable and thoughtfully built for everyday needs. You won’t find surprises here, but that’s kind of the point. It's the sort of quiet consistency that keeps a neighborhood fed...

Very bad shopping experience. The store introduced that it is open for 24 hours and delivery. I went to the store for shopping at 11 o'clock in the evening, and told the cashier staff that mail service was needed. The staff did not give any explanation. cashier. After repeated communication, they told me that the postage could not be processed until ten o'clock in the morning the next day. I said that if I could only do it the next day, then I bought too many items in three boxes. Can I store them here and come back the next morning? Do the mailing. Because the introduction on the store's official website didn't say that it does not handle mailing services at night, it said that it is open 24 hours a day and can be mailed, so I only bought three boxes of goods. This is also the first time I have encountered a Japanese supermarket chain that does not handle postage during normal business hours. Again arrogantly refused me, no, another staff member came, and did not explain what the mailing service introduced on the store's official website was. Just tell me it can't be mailed. Very bad shopping experience, will not go to this store again. 非常に悪いショッピング体験。...

This wonderful supermarket is open 24/7 and offers a veritable cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables, including cut fresh fruits and ready to eat salads.

It also has a very nice bakery section with a great variety of fresh baked items, including baguettes!

Unlike other bakeries, Maruetsu doesn’t charge extra for their pre-sliced loaves.

On weekends, particularly Saturday mornings, you can sometimes get special combination bags of rolls and pastries at a discounted price.

Like many large supermarkets, this store discounts their merchandise after dinner time, and early in...

This is probably one of the very few proper supermarket in the Shinjuku neighborhood of Tokyo. It is a large supermarket with a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen goods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, long-life products, etc. The supermarket is located in an upmarket residential neighborhood just a couple of blocks from the tourist part of Shinjuku
