I had the pleasure of learning from some exceptional instructors at Sweat Studio—Scarlet, Yuka, Brooke and Belen(Pilates). Each one would undoubtedly be a favorite at any other studio. Through their guidance, I discovered that yoga is fundamentally about technical strength, not just folding or bending. The benefits of yoga come from using your muscles to stretch and lengthen, addressing the root cause of tightness, which is often muscle imbalance. It's not about being strong or flexible but about balancing muscle strength for better overall body function.
Building on this, I highly recommend booking a class with one of the exceptionally knowledgeable and incredibly talented unicorn instructors, Maria Munkowits or Barbara Orrego. These ladies have an extraordinary understanding of the purpose of each pose. They grasp the intricate details and critical movements needed for all body types, constraints, mindsets, and available space to help everyone in the class get to where they need to. Sometimes, it felt like the placement of a pinkie finger could change the feeling of an entire pose. Maria’s Vinyasa flows are magical, connecting and combining poses in an incredibly light and easy way.
Key Takeaways from My Experience (mid-30s female, rock climber, 45-hour-a-week corporate gremlin): *After 43 sessions, I now have abs. *I started my yoga challenge to stop my knees and hips from hurting but discovered that the real issue was tightness in my mid-back. *Trust the process of getting into each pose. Every step is vital. Master each step before moving on, and the pose will serve you. Simply getting into the final pose is useless. Listen to the instructions carefully, then move your body accordingly. *Use the mirrors; no one is looking at you. Everyone is focused on themselves and their own pose. *The app-based booking, cancelling, and check-in system is a game-changer for scheduling, knowing the number of participants in class, and managing other time commitments. *Parking wasn’t hard work or difficult to find.
A Few Words of Warning for Newcomers: *Sweat Studio is not a Lululemon fashion parade. The community here is focused on the practice, not only Instagram posts. (Though there is plenty of Lululemon because it’s functional!) *Don’t expect other studios to have as many capable instructors. Manage your expectations =). *Do not bring your phone into the studio. It’s rude to others, insulting to the instructor, and distracting.
I could have probably just written: Sweat Studio offers a surprisingly exceptional yoga experience with a focus on technical strength and an inviting community. Highly recommended! – but I could’ve also...
Read moreExcellent Hot Pilates Experience - Highly Recommend! I've been attending classes at Sweat and I'm genuinely impressed with the quality and atmosphere. This is what hot pilates should be! From the moment you walk in, the staff are kind and welcoming, especially to newcomers. They take the time to make you feel comfortable and answer any questions without making you feel like an inconvenience. The classes themselves are outstanding. Each session begins with proper breathwork to center yourself and prepare your body for the workout. The instructors clearly know what they're doing the movements flow together with beautiful synchronicity, feeling choreographed and rehearsed rather than just randomly jumping from one exercise to another. It's clear they've put thought into the structure of each class. You genuinely break a sweat here (hence the name), and you can feel that you've had a proper, effective workout. The environment is welcoming and supportive, never cliquey or intimidating. Most importantly, you leave feeling energized and accomplished, not just like you went through...
Read moreA really superb hot yoga studio - highly recommended. I have come over from Sydney on a long trip to Auckland, and decided to try out this studio. I had previously practised at the East West studio (also owned by Bruce) which had been mainly bikram yoga and some vinyasa classes, and had liked that studio too. When that studio closed, this one opened.
But this studio is something else. If you want to get really fit and strong, this is THE PLACE. The level of the teaching is very high, and all the classes are extremely challenging - which is fantastic. In Sydney there are rather too many 'beginner'-focused studios, which fail to stimulate. This is the complete opposite. Obviously for those familiar with bikram, this is hard core, AND challenging. There is a 60 minute and a 90 minute class. The hot pilates is fantastic, while the hot vinyasa is really great. You will never be bored here.
I have come every day during the 2 week trial offer (a bargain), and have loved every single class. What are you...
