This is difficult review to write as we booked 2 tours with the company and had vastly different experiences. If you are going to book anything with this company make sure you book a private tour, not a group tour. I would like to say that both of our guides were excellent and really knew what they were talking about and did their best to make the experience enjoyable.
Firstly I will cover the group tour we booked to see the Sacred Valley. Pick up was discussed in the briefing the day before. I didn't really understand the reason to have a briefing as all of the information could have been sent by WhatsApp prior to the tour. We booked an English group tour. What this became was a tour where the guide spoke English but our entire group only spoke Spanish so the entire tour, the guide had to do explanations twice. The group was BIG - 18 people! What made the experience worse was that everyone seemed to be on a slightly different tour. We had a general plan for the day but some of the group left for a train to Machu Picchu halfway. Some people had their tickets covered in their tour price and some didn't (It wasn't made clear to us until our guide found out that ours were included) and we had 3 different places for lunch for different members of the group. On top of this we had 3 stops which were essentially for shopping. While it's nice to learn about some of the cultural aspects of the area, it meant we spent less time at the archaeological sites which was the main point of the tour! At the end of the day we were dropped in the main square at Cusco instead of our hotels so after a long day, we had to make our own way back to our hotel.
The previous experience meant we changed our Rainbow Mountain tour to private and honestly it was well worth it. We had a lovely guide and driver who picked us up on time, spent time answering our questions and took us up the mountain at our own pace. We had an amazing experience and given the cost was only double the cost of the group tour, it was very good value and well worth it. If you're going to go with this company, please pay the extra for the private tour. It is worth the price difference as it seems the company tries to cram as many people as possible onto the group tours and takes advantage of as many commission opportunities as they...
Read moreWe had a fantastic 5 day 4 night Salkantay Trek tour with ITEP.
Our guide Amilcar was knowledgeable, friendly and always making extra effort throughout to make our experience even better. Despite several landslides along the Salkantay route, we felt much safer with Amilkar's guidance, which we noticed was not the case for most other groups we saw.
The 5 day trek is certainly challenging, but if you are well prepared and have taken the time to acclimatise prior to leaving, it will reward you with incredibly varied and stunning scenery.
The accommodation provided exceeded our expectations. You can't expect luxury when trekking in these remote locations, but we had everything we needed and the locations felt very authentic and cosy!
We are very glad we booked with Inka Trail...
Read moreWe did the 5 day Salkantay trek with the wonderful Percy as our guide. The trek itself is tough and for those with resilience but varied and highly rewarding. So many highlights. Machu Picchu itself is so special.
The trek is really well organised. The cooks, Paulino and his son Christian are brilliant. The food was fantastic and an absolute saver after each trek session.
Our guide Percy was brilliant. He combined high standards of professionalism with a personal tough and became part of the group. His timely sharing of knowledge and insight enriched our experience. He provided support for each team member and it is clear that is part of the company culture. And we had a lot of fun and laughs.
As such highly recommend this travel company for anyone considering a...
