I like these types of market better than those in USA. Wal-Mart, IGA, Publix's, Food Lion. Multiple booths offering same products so they can deal or you can find one who will.
Mercat del Clot
The origins of Mercat del Clot go back to the 19th century, when the neighbourhood belonged to the separate town of Sant Martí de Provençals and had an open-air market to which local farmers brought their produce.
By the end of the 19th century, the growth in the local population meant that a permanent covered market was necessary and in 1889, the fine structure built by Pere Falqués i Urpí opened to the public.
Made out of brick and supported on an iron frame, this striking building is pre-Modernista and almost like a church, the inside, where the stalls are located, is divided into three sections.
Over the years Clot Market has undergone a number of restorations, principally in 1964, 1969 and the most recent and important one in 1995.
Today, the Mercat del Clot is one of the most emblematic Barcelona markets and a focus for the local community as it offers plenty of activities, such as cooking courses and occasional exhibitions, as well as participating actively in festivals and celebrations.
As well as the typical offer of meat, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables and frozen foods, Clot Market has a bar and stalls selling non-food items outside the main building.
It offers free parking to customers, home delivery and some stalls offer an online service and there is also a Super Estalvi...
Read moreCloses 2, and just before that some, but not all, prices go down. Many doors are open allowing access from different sides. I found the prices to be comparable to the supermarkets around, but I think the quality of fish, at least, is better. It's worth to go around the stalls and choose what you like the most, and prices, and sometimes you get fee gifts (lemon, parceley, etc) and some conversation (language practice or just let them teach you how to fry fish). English is often spoken, but if not you can explain "by 10 fingers", -gestures for cutting, slicing, i.e. split a fishhead to fry it, keep tongue, cheeks, eyes (I thorough reccomend that delicacy!) Some sellers do good job filetting, others are rubbish. Markets like these are a threatened part of human culture. They require good communication skills, ability to observe, bargain with respect, keeping guard against being taken advantage of. So I thoroughly recommend taking your young with you, to teach them planning, organisation, choosing food for heallth and budget, counting, and...
