"Why are you taking photos of the food?". That's the first thing I heard when I entered the Swedish railroad company SJ's lounge at Stockholm Central Station. The woman asking was an (unmasked) lounge staff member, and the question baffled me to the extent I had to ask her why wanted to know. The only thing I shot was the food, which the photos attached this review show.
In retrospect, the buffet didn't really justify any photos - at least not if you're not a fan of garlic dip sauce, dry salty crackers, olives, carrot sticks, fig (!) marmelade, smelly moldy cheese and apple juice. The kind of comfort food that most people enjoy, and that you'll find in most airport lounges, is nowhere to be had here. SJ's lounge seems to be more about stiff, assumed up-scale food items than things people in general, including kids, favor. If sandwiches, pastries, soft drinks, pasta salads and the occasional carrot soup are your thing then look elsewhere. This lounge is more about what you'd expect to find at an art exhibition, and less about satisfying your belly for a four hour train trip.
The lounge atmosphere is, on the other hand, relaxed and quiet. The contrast to the busy concourse below the panoramic windows is inarguably stark, which - along with the bathroom amenities - is likely the real reason why you want to spend time here in the first place. The coaches and armchairs and the sound proof glass almost make up for the sub par buffet, the broken WiFi and snarky...
Read moreThe SJ Lounge at Stockholm Central Station is a true oasis for travelers. Having visited it on several occasions while waiting for my train connections, I can confidently say it significantly enhances the travel experience. It's perfectly situated, easily accessible right by the main hall, making it a convenient stop before or after your journey. The lounge offers a peaceful retreat from the usual hustle and bustle of the station, which is truly invaluable when you need to relax or get some work done. The complimentary snacks and beverages, while not a full meal, are always fresh and a welcome touch – think good coffee, tea, juices, and often some fruit, pastries, or light sandwiches. The Wi-Fi is reliable, and there are ample power outlets, which is crucial for staying connected. What really stands out is the serene atmosphere. Despite being in a busy train station, the design and layout, with comfortable seating and a generally quiet ambiance, make it feel private and calming. I particularly appreciate the phone booths, which allow for undisturbed calls without bothering other guests. The staff are consistently friendly and helpful, adding to the overall positive impression. It's definitely a worthwhile perk for first-class ticket holders or SJ Prio Premium members, turning what could be a stressful wait into a comfortable and productive interlude. Currently on...

Inter-railing around Europe with a first class ticket grants access to lounges on all the main networks, but nothing, so far, compares to this! Friendly staff, comfortable seating zones, incredible vegan friendly salads, a wide range of hot and cold drinks are included. The vermicelli salad is a particular highlight. The lattes here are also top notch, with syrup available.
There is luggage storage and a range of newspapers available too.
All in all this lounge excels from those I've visited in several neighbouring countries due to its stunning setting, overlooking the terminal; the smart and professional staff; a classy modern business meets 4 star hotel aesthetic, and the truly mouth...
