Despite living near the Paddington area, I have not tried the Rice Guys food truck there. Have tried this location twice, once on a Saturday in March around noon when they just opened for the day, and another on a weekday just this week, around 1pm, during the business lunch crowd. Both times, I found the rice to be hard and grainy, rather indigestible. Initially, I thought they just opened on a Saturday late morning/early afternoon, so the top layer of the rice in the rice cooker could be less cooked than those in the middle of the rice cooker, for example. But on the second try on a weekday around 1pm, I found the rice to be grainy and dry as well, like it wasn't cooked in the middle of each grain. On the first try on Saturday, the rice tasted like glutinous rice, all sticky and slightly uncooked in the middle of each grain. On the second try, it was grainy in the middle of each grain and dry, not moist and fluffy as it should be. I believe it could be due to the fact that the kitchen crew try to cook too much rice in the rice cooker with insufficient water to cook the rice completely. Other than that, everything seems good and authentic, especially the ginger sauce. I am originally from Singapore, so I can vouch for good Hainanese Chicken Rice and Char Siew Rice. Everything is 5-star here, including the service, except for the rice. I may have to give the rice a 1-star or no stars at all. Hence, a overall score of 4-star for now, for the meats, sauces, garnish, effort and good service. I hope the Rice Guys can improve on the rice on my next...
Read moreExtremely impressed by the hainanese chicken and pork dish. Reminds me very much of Malaysia.
I was only walking around Canada Square and kept smelling what I thought was hainanese chicken. That's when I discovered Rice Guys although they weren't open yet.
This is my 2nd time ordering (my 1st was just the pork dish).
The rice is so well flavoured, the chili is very tasty, and the ginger scallion sauce is also great. The chicken is surprisingly tender and the pork is more tender and less overcooked compared to my first time.
As for those complaining about the price. I get it, Malaysia and Singapore will always be cheaper but let's be real about labour costs, regulations, and rent in the UK. Don't give it a 1-star just because of price.
I'd say the dish should be more closely priced to be £7-9. Overall however, this dish hits the spot either at lunch or dinner when there's a sudden craving for a nostalgic dish from my home country. Lots of Malay food in London but not much Chinese Malay dishes, especially within the noodle soup department and Rice Guys is pretty much next door to me.
You all have my support! Hoping to see if you will...
Read moreNaveen & Venky at Rice Guys have made it my favorite eatery in all of London. That's a lot coming from a fella who's eaten everywhere from Hawksmoore and Goodman's to all the little places in between.
If you can get it, the crispy pork is where it's at. Nothing compares. Second best though would be the pork-chicken combo with enough red peppers to cause you to wonder if they're trying to kill you. Cripsy pork is only available at the Canary Wharf and London Wall locations (afaik) and you gotta be there early or its all gone.
While I don't always get to those locations, I do tend to eat at the truck in the Canopy Market at St.Pancras/Kings Cross, which is currently open Weds-Sun. Don't be afraid to ask them to doctor your order up with extra peppers or other elements (the sauce for the pork is phenomenal). Thanks y'all for taking such great care and being consistently...
