This place has got its pros and cons. I will probably only scratch the surface, since I don't use a lot at the gym, only the elliptical and the lap pool but I do have a lot to say about my experiences in these areas.
Since the pool is part of my routine, my choice of gyms is limited. I live in Pasadena and normally would go to the one out there but since I took a job in Covina, the traffic when I get close to the Lake Ave exit is always really congested and the parking situation there can get pretty gnarly, particularly during peak time, when the 9-5'ers like myself leave work. So, I came upon this one when looking for one on the way between home and the office.
So as far as the elliptical, I was surprised by how many machines they have. This negates the possibility of anyone having to wait to get their cardio in. The machines are also new and for the most part they keep them clean. My only complaint is, on the workout floor, they blast their own music. Normally, it's ok to have something on in the background but they play it so loud that it steps on the music I'm playing in my headphones and I have to turn up mine that much louder to drown it out.
Next is the locker rooms. Obviously, I haven't been in the women's locker room but as far as the men's, it's about standard. I don't really find myself having to fight for a locker or space to change, which is a nice surprise, considering my schedule forces me to be there during the busiest times. I haven't used the showers here yet but the bathroom part is kept in working order and for the most part clean.
Now., for the pool. The biggest problem is not with the pool itself but the people in it. Never have I seen such disorganization and disregard for etiquette before and that's saying a lot, since I used to go to the 24 in Hollywood. They have 3 lanes for swimming laps. When I was there earlier this week, one lap was completely taken up by people who were wading with the floating noodles and other people just standing in the lane talking, negating the possibility for anyone to swim laps. In the other 2 lanes, there was a ridiculous amount of people, like 4 or 5, that were taking turns swimming a lap and then another person or 2 people would go. Eventually, someone had the cojones to start swimming in the idle lane, prompting the stragglers to move and then exit the pool, leaving more room for the actual swimmers. That isn't my only bad experience though. People here seem to think that it's ok to just jump in and start swimming in a lane you're using, without asking or even giving you a heads up. Then when you almost crash into them, they look at you like "what? You should have seen me get in!" Another thing is how they share lanes here. The way it's supposed to be done is, one person stays on the left side of the blue line and the other person on the right. They, however swim one side going in one direction and the other side coming back. I guess this is so more than 2 people can share a lane at a time but the drawback is, what if one person is slow and another is a fast swimmer? Then you got people going around and crashing into another person on the other side.
The fact is, no one using the pool knows how to be patient and wait. They just chisel their way in and don't care. Oh and one more thing I almost forgot about. On Thursdays, they close the pool down around 6 or so for a 3 hour water aerobics class. Is it really necessary to do this during peak hours? They have all day during the week when most people are working when they could do this. Not like there aren't other classes going on during the day.
I haven't gone to the floor where the weight machines and free weights are. so I can't comment on that part but as far as what I've experienced overall, I would recommend the gym for their cardio equipment but not for...
Read moreLooks like most of the recent reviews summarize my experience since I joined last November. Everything that everyone has said is true: it’s filthy, staff is unhelpful and incompetent, and the equipment is in a constant flux of disrepair.
However, to specify: The pool area is a disaster - the hot tub was broken for well over a month, there was a broken vent that made it hard to breathe while swimming laps, and there’s a flurry of unsavory activity from large groups of teens crowding the lanes while not swimming to uninvited people breaking in and acting in unsafe ways. The weight room is dysfunctional - 1/3 of the equipment is broken, people who may or may not be members are sleeping in all areas of the space, and the equipment that is working is either in poor condition and or filthy. The staff doesn’t address complaints or problems, e.g. - 1) While the vent in the pool area was broken, I was told that there would be a sign put up to keep the door propped open to help circulate air. After 4 phone calls with management, this simple act still never happened. 2) Closures aren’t well communicated - (a) The jacuzzi was stated to be closed down for only 2 weeks, and it ended up being closed down for nearly 2 months with no explanation. (b) Yesterday, the gym closed at 11pm with no explanation. Tried to call all day today and no one answered the phone (which is a regular occurrence). (c) I’ve noticed several times when uninvited people have come in and created a disturbance, it took staff way too long to address the concerns of members.
I understand, especially late at night, that being by the Metro makes this a difficult location on every front, including the ones I addressed. It’s also not beyond my ability to comprehend that this is 24-Hour Fitness, not Equinox. However, many of these problems can be mitigated with procedural and operational change. Last night, I went to the Glendora location and it was as if it was operated by a different company. Clearly, Arcadia is just a very poorly run location. Considering that complaints on here don’t seem to be taken seriously, I’m filing a formal complaint with corporate and going to the Glendora location for the foreseeable future, even though it’s double...
Read moreThe public areas of gym are average, lockerooms, sauna, steam, small and stank. However, I'm really writing this review because this past Saturday morning (10/21) I went there, and walked over to a machine that no one was on and started to adjust it. A female (27-32 Latina) was on a machine on the row in front of me (7 feet in front&diagonal with her back to me), saw me and said "I'm using that" and said some term that meant that she was supposedley using two machines at that same time. I said, "so what does that mean, that no one can use this while you're using the other". She replied you could have asked? I said ask who (I guess I'm suppose to ask around B4 using an empty machine)? She replies, "never mind you need it more than me, fata* stupid cnt", and starts lecturing me about "gym etiquette". She went back to the machine she was on and kept turning around to address me. Then it seemed she was trying to take my picture, so I snapped hers, and went and told Justin at the front desk (only male there that morning). I told Justin (25-30 lighter skin latino) she was wearing black pants and tank, hair pulled up, and he went upstairs to talk to her. He came back down a minute or two later, and after another 10 minutes passed and I didn't see her come down, I went to ask Justin if he spoke with her. Justin said she was going to come and give her information on her way out after her workout. I eventually had to leave, but never saw her come down to give her information. Hopefully Justin did his job, and wasn't friends with her or just brushing me off (gym employees can be super shady). Can you imagine that a person verbally attacks you because you start to use an empty machine. I didn't know members could save multiple machines at the same time. Also if you're going to attack someone's physical appearance at least make sure you can be rated above a 3 on a scale of 1-10. Apparently, she equates being skinny with being attractive - she was far from it . Attached is a picture of the female - if you know her teach her manners & basic etiquette apparently she's only familiar with "gym etiquette" ? I'm female, and...
