I'll tell you my experience, and let you decide... Is it ridiculous of me to find this kind of customer treatment unacceptable?
When the owner didn't show at the posted opening time, I waited alongside a group who, if it hadn't been for paying money the day before, would have left in frustration for another place to spend their money. Telling them to arrive early, only to make them wait an hour for him to show, the owner narrowly avoided them calling their respective credit card companies and refuting the charges. They were understandably upset.
Locals offering advice during the wait said it was typical of this (apparently new) ownership/management, as the previous owner had recently experienced a tragic medical condition and was no longer operating the business.
Upon hearing this bit of sad news, I decided to return later to rent, despite my initial frustration. When I did, a man (who identified himself as the owner) engaged me with what I can only describe as the worst retail/service attitude in recent memory.
Mentioning my previous experience, he met me with indifference, or worse, a sense of pride in his lack of timeliness. Added to this was a nearly hostile attitude towards myself and my four kids. (Ages 9-15) The only positive outcome was a good lesson for them on how to never treat customers.
The shop itself is very cute, the bikes seem like great quality; really seems shameful to have this kind of customer service behind the handlebars... hopefully this review will motivate some adjustments, and make for better experience with...
Read moreMy husband and I spent a week up in Bar Harbor and rented bikes from the Bar Harbor Pedego store for two of those days. My husband is an avid road cyclist and rides thousands of miles each year so he's hard to impress when it comes to bike stores.
But we were both blown away by the level of knowledge and service we received. This is a family owned business and they are one incredible family. We were greeted by Phoebe behind the counter who is only 14 years old but don't let that fool you. Her level of maturity and knowledge about the bikes was well beyond her years. She even went over all the trails up in Acadia National Park with us and told us all about the best place to have lunch up there.
Then on the next day, we were greeted by Mallory who is Phoebe's 17 year-old sister. We also had another great conversation with her as she made sure our bikes were ready to go. This family has four daughters and everyone of them work at the store including their 7 year old who sells water and other snack items to customers.
We loved this story and hope to see them again next summer when we come back to Acadia National Park.
We would highly recommend making a reservation and renting early because they are a busy store in a great location and the...
Read moreMy wife and I rented two e-bikes for a full day a few weeks ago. The bikes were new and in good condition. The person in the shop was nice and explained the loop ride and gave us some tips about getting around. The bikes easily handled the hilly terrain. We returned the bikes at the end of the day. We had a chat with the person in the shop. He asked us if we had a nice ride, looked at the bikes briefly and sent us on our way.
About a week later a $55 charge appeared on my credit card. I called to inquire and the person informed me the bikes were very dirty and required a complete cleaning which was the reason for the charge. This was not the case. We stayed on the main road in the loop. Only pulling into the gravel next to the road to park the bikes and take pictures. I asked why the person at the shop didn't mention this to us when we returned the bikes. That would have been the appropriate time. He said he would look into it and get back to me. I never got any response.
Since they didn't get back to me, I assume this may be a standard practice (should I say scam). So I would advice people to review the condition upon returning your bike and get an agreement BEFORE you leave the shop. Rental car businesses do this, so should...
