Hello, my name is Teletha Finch, My deceased son’s name is Jacobi Finch. On July 17th my son Jacobi needed to stay over night at Children’s Hospital In Birmingham, , to get a TON change in his milk. Dr. Galloway and Linda Wilkerson were his GI Dr.’s.Jacobi had Liver issues, that’s why he was getting the milk changed. We stayed over night. The nurses gave Jacobi 150mg of his own medication 3 different times during the overnight stay. His regular dose is 50mg 3 times a day.. They done a stomach scan with dye that morning, they gave I’m 300mg of a new medication while he was there,,we went home the next day. Jacobi slept all day, all night. I looked thru the paper work, and notice his dose was wrong , took him back that night ER sent him home.thru the week I talked to Linda Wilkerson, she assured me he’s ok, I took him back 7 days later , he was sent to ICU, he was put on dialysis, never having a Kidney issue, Jacobi was in so much pain for months, Cobi had CP, he needed his regular meds to keep for cramping up, the dialysis cleaned it all out and he was suffering, for 2 months there. When they discharged him, we had to rush back I took him to UAB, which is not for children but I didn’t want them caring for him they failed him the first time. UAB said that Jacobi has a blood clot the size of a grapefruit, that wasn’t there before the overnight stay, children’s didn’t even tell the family it was there. They said this happy 19 year old child would be on Pain medication for the rest of his life now, when he was fine before the overnight stay, They put Jacobi in ICU on a ventilator, for a 3 weeks, then he was put in Palliative Care to pass peacefully with no pain. I asked then could I please bring him home to pass with him Family, they let him come home, with hospice, Jacobi died in my arms Sunday Morning, Nov-3-2019. Children’s Hospital said they done nothing wrong he was already dying, his Dr’s didn’t inform me of that news, he was only dying after he was overdosed and it was swept under the rug the night I went to the ER, he should have been fully checked out, but they are the professional in that area I trusted them. Now my Child has passed away, He’s no longer here after all this happened, but if Jacobi would have passed away, and none of the above happened, I would understand his body couldn’t take it he passed, but he was FINE BEFORE THEY OVERDOSED MY SON. He hasn’t been in the hospital in over a year before this if he’s dying wouldn’t I see the signs before the bad thing happened and not 7 days after it happened? He was all smiles, now he’s gone.

My only advice is to stay far away from Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham!! From start to finish, we received inadequate care. My son, Enoch Murphy, was transferred to the PICU for Renal Dialysis after the dialysis pumps in the NICU continuously kept malfunctioning over the course of a two week period; causing great distress to his body. The dialysis pumps were pulling off entirely too much fluid. The doctors and specialists were unable to get his fluid levels regulated. My son was then transferred to PICU to switch from the Aquadex Pump to the Prismax because the hospital staff was unable to figure out why their Aquadex Pumps were faulty and continued to malfunction. Enoch was overdosed and given 10x the correct dosage of medication shortly after being admitted to the PICU. He was overdosed on paralyzing medication; it took 16 hours after being overdosed for my son to be able to even wiggle his toes. 24 hours after the overdose, he finally was able to move his arms. He was paralyzed yet awake during the entire ordeal and in great pain. My son coded after he was overdosed by the nurse practitioner, and the medication was administered through the nurses without any sort of verification. Immediately after being overdosed, my son coded and went into cardiac arrest, suffering sufficient brain damage from the lack of oxygen. Sadly, my son was never the same after the overdose. Enoch passed away 11 days later due to complications with his heart; complications that occurred during the overdose. Before his transfer to the PICU, Enoch's ECHO Exam report was normal. He had two normal ECHO scans before he coded in the PICU. After being overdosed, the cardiologist said his heart was in great stress and inflamed. Do not recommend this facility!!! Unfortunately, this hospital is known for medical negligence. #JusticeForEnoch #EnochStrong #MedicalMalpractice

I'm giving 3 stars because the majority of staff are very nice and helpful BUT my 2 week old daughter has been here since Monday 12/5/2022 and has not been able to rest AT ALL. She's had over TEN needles in her since she got here all just trying to get blood. Blowed 2 veins so far and my daughter is so exhausted she can barely cry anymore even from pain. This is BEYOND sad and I'm about ready to leave this place with my child and not look back. She don't deserve this nor is it necessary. The majority of what they do is to collect insurance money. They make BANK off these kids and they give them more meds and testing than they really need so they can continue to make bank. I'll gladly speak with someone about this. Listening to a doctor's opinion is what got us here to begin with. Update: we are home and she is 100% better but I told the doctors we aren't asking if we can go home we are telling you we're going home because they wanted to keep her there another day for no reason so they ended up telling us we could leave because they knew we were leaving anyway.

I'm only giving the ER at this hospital two stars because someone evidently lied or they had no clue of what they were doing. My husband and I took our 5 year old daughter to the ER on Sunday night March 5th . We were there from 9:45pm to a little after 2am the following morning. We took our daughter there because she had a fever of 104.2 and it was climbing and we couldn't get it down. When we finally got to a room and a young doctor came in to talk to us and then she had a nurse to come in swab my daughter for the flu and strep throat. After the the nurse left a more season doctor came in to follow-up behind the younger doctor because I think she was new to her job plus she did say her supervisor would come in and check behind her. Well, while waiting forever for the results it came back that my daughter had the flu and no strep throat. So they told me to alternate with Motrin and Tylenol and she should be fine in a couple of days. Well she wasn't. I stop giving her Tylenol and just gave he Motrin because it was helping just a little bit better than the Tylenol. Monday night she broke out all over in a rash and her fever stayed from 101 to 103. So that Tuesday morning I called her pediatrician and he said for me to bring her in because it sounded like she had strep throat. When I got her there I informed him that we had been to the ER Sunday night and that they said she had the flu but the results for strep throat came back negative. He said he would swab her again because he was almost positive that it was strep throat. Well after swabbing her and waiting no more than ten minutes her results came back positive for strep throat. He explained that that's why her fever would never break and that he would prescribe her some antibiotics and after a day or two she she be able to return to school if she is fever free for 24 hours. It is now Thursday and I get a call from Children's of Alabama and they're telling me that they are calling me to let me know that my daughter's results for strep throat is positive. I told her yeah I know because her pediatrician had already seen her after the fact we had been to the ER and that she's been treated for it and had returned back to school this morning. She apologized and said it took two days for the results to come back. I was so lost for words because I then realized that my husband and I had been lied to or the nurse and doctors that saw us didn't know what they were doing or they just didn't care about my child all together. She said it took two days but it's Thursday. Plus it took the hospital supposedly two days for the results but it took a doctors office only 10 minutes. She knew someone screwed up especially when I told her my daughters pediatrician had already seen her, and treated her for the problem and she had already returned to school...

With RSV being at an all time high, I understand being super busy but that does not mean you should forget about your patients. My daughter was admitted for RSV, Bronchiolitis and Pneumonia and at first the care was great but after the 2nd night staying here I felt like we were put on the back burner and my concerns were put off with bad attitude. We were then told we were being moved to Dearth Tower and it took several hours for this to happen and the nurses were in too much of a rush to do their shift changes that I just felt my daughter was their last concern. Her IV machine was going off for over 15 minutes even after I tried to call a nurse in and in the meantime my daughter projectile vommited everywhere and I stood there alone with her a while longer while they did their shift change. We moved to Dearth Tower several hours later that night and the nurses were great there but the next morning ( day 3 )my daughter's doctor came in telling me how great she was recovering, she sounded good and we were going to plan to discharge.. well 5 o'clock rolled around and her doctor never showed back up. I asked our nurse at the time what the plan was and she had absolutely no idea that we were planning to discharge. A FEW hours go by and a nurse I had never met before walked in fired up telling me how they're super busy and the doctors leave at 5 and that they only have ONE DOCTOR for the whole entire hospital for emergencies only and that person couldn't discharge us because they didn't know anything about my daughters situation. She also told me I should make sure I tell the nurse what my doctor say so they know what is going on. My job is to worry about my daughter, not make sure the nurse and the doctor communicate..that night the nurses came in more than any night we stayed there even though "she was great and sounded great" we both did not sleep at all. If her IV machine wasnt going off they were in the room checking her vitals. Then this nurse proceeded to tell me we aren't being discharged. The next morning, (day 4) her 2nd doctor (that wasn't the one that talked to me about discharge) came in and basically told us we could get ready to be discharged. I fully believe they kept us there another night to milk our insurance. Not to mention I've requested her medical records from her visit about 2 weeks ago and still have not received them. I will never come back to this hospital ever again. I could say so much more but I feel I got my point across. Terrible...
