Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., formerly Hobby Lobby Creative Centers, is an American retail company. It owns a chain of arts and crafts stores with a volume of over $5 billion in 2018. The chain has 932 Stores In 47 states (every state except Alaska, Hawaii, and Vermont). A Christian-based company, Hobby Lobby incorporates American conservative values and Christian media.
In 1972, David Green opened the first Hobby Lobby store in northwest Oklahoma City. Green left his supervisor position with variety store TG&Y to open a second Hobby Lobby in Oklahoma City in 1975. He opened an additional store in Tulsa, Oklahoma the next year. Hobby Lobby grew to seven stores by mid-1982, and the first store outside Oklahoma opened in 1984. When Green expanded the scope of the business to include furniture and high-end cookware during the early 1980s, it led to losses as the economy slowed. He returned to an arts and crafts emphasis and by late-1992, the chain had grown to 50 locations in seven U.S. states. As of 2020, the chain has more than 900 locations nationwide.
David Green, the son of a preacher, declares on the Hobby Lobby web site, "Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles."Â All stores are closed on Sundays to "allow employees time for family and worship," according to signs posted on the front doors of their retail stores.
The company's full-time hourly wage had been $15 since 2014. They announced on September 14, 2020 that it would be raised to $17 effective October 1, 2020. It continued that trend by raising the minimum full-time hourly wage to $18.50, effective Jan. 1, 2022, while increasing its part-time minimum hourly wage by 18% to $13. Hobby Lobby claims it has raised its minimum wage twelve times over the last...
Read moreMy husband and I went into this store specifically for oil paints and supplies to paint along with a Bob Ross video for date night, something my husband has wanted to do for a very long time, so we were very excited to finally gather the supplies and do it! While filling up our cart a few employees came into the isle with us and a woman (cannot recall her name but she was older, 60s maybe, wore glasses, and wasnât very tall) asked if we need help. We told her no, weâre on a well planned mission and told her what our plan was to paint with Bob Ross. She immediately became VERY condescending and rude. She questioned us several times about using oil paints as semi-beginners, insinuating we had no business even attempting such a feat. She concerningly asked if we knew that Bob Ross was a serial killer (???). When we pushed back and basically stated we donât care what you think, weâre doing this, she was again very condescending and said âwell when youâre done youâll have to take pictures and come back to show meâ. It was such a wild and rude interaction she had no business even starting. The only reason this review wound up with 2 stars is because of the cashier we had who, when we told her our plan, offered us nothing but encouragement and excitement (as I think craft store employees should in this situation regardless of how they truly feel). Anyways, donât go to this Hobby Lobby excited and looking to try something new, because if âKarenâ finds out, youâre in for an earful on how youâre biting off more than you can chew and plenty other unsolicited...
Read moreI purchased some fall decorations, and the wood became very fragile and weak within a week. I took the items back to the store and the manager and the assistance manager refused to give me a refund for the items or exchange the items. The assistant manager laughed in my face and thought the situation was funny. Sheâs very unprofessional. I called corporate office, and the representative sent me a gift card because the items were defective. The manager and the assistance manager need to work on their customer service skills, because they provided bad customer service. I no longer shop at the store in Bossier City. I shop at the Hobby Lobby in Shreveport. The employees and the management are very professional, and they provide outstanding customer service. Shame on the leadership at the...
