This review is for a sound healing session led by Mandy Goldman that I attended a few weeks ago.
While the sound bowls themselves were lovely and created a relaxing atmosphere, something that happened near the end of the session left me feeling quite disappointed. Another participant complimented Mandy on the Indian music that was played during the session. To my surprise, Mandy responded by saying the music "sounded like nonsense words" but claimed it gained meaning with repeated listening.
This comment about the traditional Indian shlokas being nonsense words was disrespectful and dismissive. It's frustrating to see cultural practices like shlokas being borrowed from Eastern traditions, potentially simplified or altered, and then presented in a Western context without proper understanding or reverence. Do wish they had free mats ($2 rentals) for use but they make up for it with offering access...
Read moreBoston Yoga Union in Coolidge Corner is such a peaceful, calming space. From the second you walk in, it just feels good—like a little escape from the chaos of the outside world. It’s clean, quiet, and has such a welcoming vibe.
I especially love taking classes with Matt and Tim. Their classes are so creative and unique—it’s like getting a mini workshop every time, but still within the flow of a regular class. They explain things in a way that really makes sense, and you always leave feeling like you learned something new about your body or your practice.
The whole studio just has great energy. Everyone’s super kind, and it never feels...
