Great find in Carmel. Coming from the retail/merchandising world, the store is not very user-friendly as most of their product is displayed spine out (journals) and across shelving almost ceiling to floor with limited room to browse comfortably. I feel it's time for them to move to larger dwellings and possibly expand their assortment. Pens look great but overwhelmingly focused on Montblanc at the expense of others. Totally understand they are popular.
I felt a bit dismissed by the store attendant when I asked her about Waterman and she took me to a display at the entrance and said to me that they are 'has beens.' I mean, who even uses that term these days...and with a customer asking about an iconic brand?! ( I had my first Waterman in college back in 1984 and have loved them since).
She was probably trying to steer me in the direction of Montblanc but ended up insulting my preference. That ended the pen discussion as I assumed she would not be carrying ink cartridges for 'has been' pens.
Anyway, I did get some beautiful stationery and cards so I was a happy camper. From other reviews here it seems the service here is quite inconsistent. Hope they take this as constructive criticism. There are not many stores like this one any more and we should all feel super...

The kind of pens one'll use for decades onward, the kind of pens one'll pass on to one's descendants even. A mecca for pen collectors willing to expand their collection, as well as inquire on the knowledgeable staff's recommendations and options.
They don't have much focus on vintage items, but much of the collection has a timeless quality. Of note are the special offers they have, as well as replacement fountain pen nibs they either have in storage or can find and have delivered promptly.
They do not offer art supplies; The focus of this establishment is for the writer, not the visual artist.
Overall, a phenomenal choice for those looking for both a writing utensil for life, as well as those searching for a gift fit for someone special with a penchant for the written word. I hope to return...

Walking into The Pleasure of Writing in Carmel, I was immediately drawn to the beautifully curated selection of fine pens and elegant parchment. As someone who appreciates the art of writing, I was excited to browse and perhaps find a new addition to my collection.
However, my experience was soured by the interaction with a sales associate who appeared disheveled and, unfortunately, made me feel like I had no business being there. Rather than a warm welcome or assistance, I felt judged, as if my presence was inconvenient.
It’s disappointing when a place built around the love of writing and creativity fails to extend that appreciation to its customers. I truly wanted to enjoy my visit, but the lack of professionalism made it difficult.
That said, if you can overlook the service, the store is a treasure trove for writers, offering an inspiring selection of high-quality writing instruments and paper goods. I only wish my experience matched the beauty of their products.
Would I return? Perhaps. But I’d hope for a more inviting and respectful...
