I was a member at Club Pilates for over a year, and while the workouts helped strengthen my body, my overall experience was disappointing due to an unwelcoming and non-inclusive environment.
As a Black woman who shows up fully confident, stylish, and committed to her fitness. I was consistently met with microaggressions, dismissive behavior, and unprofessional comments. From instructors who refused to greet me or offer helpful corrections, to being publicly mocked about my outfits. At one point being told I looked like I was wearing "lingerie" in front of an entire class. This studio often felt more hostile than supportive.
Despite paying $169/month, I was not consistently challenged in class. And when I asked for more advanced options, I was told it might be āTOO HARDā for others rather than being offered progressions and respect for my capabilities.
Most frustrating of all was the behavior of instructor Lexi. Over time, her tone became increasingly passive-aggressive and targeted. She repeatedly made inappropriate comments about my appearance in front of the entire class and management. Once asking if I was wearing lingerie, despite me being fully dressed in matching active wear and a long windbreaker, she frequently questioned how many outfits I owned made backhanded remarks about my socks, and challenged my choice of springs. Despite knowing I was the most advanced and physically capable person in the room, her behavior felt less like instruction and more like a pattern of subtle digs and power plays. It was clear that my confidence, strength, and presence disrupted her to her core and instead of fostering growth, she seemed more invested in trying to cut me down because of her own physical insecurities.
I hope the studio takes this as an opportunity to reflect on how inclusivity, respect, and cultural sensitivity are practiced. Because no one should feel unwelcome, disrespected or othered in a place theyāre paying to attend! I highly recommend the Pike Creek location which is more diverse and not cliquish. Ā Ā Ā Read moreLove it here. The same day that I missed my intro class due to going to the wrong location, the GM, Sofia, helped me pick a plan that worked for me AND she helped get me into a CP Fundamentals class (basically a full length class for beginners or a refresher) so that I would still have a really good intro to pilates.
I wanted to take advantage of pilates classes before moving back to my home state but I didn't quite meet the 3-month minimum timeframe so I thought I wouldn't be able to take any classes. Sofia clarified that so long as I could meet my 3-package payment minimum (pay for any set of classes/credits 3x within the time I had left in-state) it'd all work out. I went with the 4-class pack based on her recommendations and I'm so glad I listened.
From the way staff members explain the packages, what to expect, timing and flexibilities in policy to the way all of our instructors are so clear in their directions, observations, and helpful adjustments is just 10/10. You will always get your full 50 mins per class and you will always feel that burn. Highly recommend the Brandywine location if it's a close enough drive for you and, again, another special shoutout to Sofia for helping me get started with the club on what was a very stressful...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreNever did Pilates until I join this club. Was definitely skeptical and intimidated about the whole idea but once I did the introduction class, it gave me the confident and encouragement I needed to become a member. I believe I tried almost all the instructors and all them are amazing, bubbly and supportive. Once you start taking the courses you will get an idea of which instructor fits your style/intensity; but regardless of who you are with, you will still have a good class. The only downside is booking classes. If you are like me and you donāt have a consistent schedule itās hard to plan out your classes for the week. If you wait till the last minute, most likely all the classes for that day and the next day will be booked (and there might be 3 people ahead of you on the waitlist). If you are on the waitlist though, they are very good at communicating if you got the spot or not, but there has been a few times where I wasnāt able to book a class because everything was book. The more I go the more I enjoy it so now Iām starting to plan my schedule around Pilates š©š!!! Honestly, if you book it in advance it makes you hold yourself accountable so perhaps itās...
