As we all do, I often scroll through social media looking for new and exciting things to do. When I came across The Sage Head Spa, I instantly fell in love with the concept! I mean, I love massages, facials, and the best part of any hair appointment is the shampoo, so imagine my excitement when my husband gifted me a gift card for the Charlotte location for Christmas.

I was so thrilled and told all my girlfriends we had to go. Of course, I wanted to be the first to try it out. When I went to book, I was initially disappointed that all the spots were filled. However, I placed my name on the waiting list, and eventually, I secured a 4:45 PM appointment on Sunday, February 5th.

After confirming my appointment, I was instructed to fill out pre-appointment paperwork. This included specifying preferences for services, selecting add-ons (I chose the hot stones, the luxe facial with extractions, and a rough blow dry), as well as massage pressure (I requested deep pressure) and water temperature (I selected hot).

I arrived 20 minutes early, and the appointment started on time. Tiana, a very polite and professional aesthetician, greeted me and guided me to prepare for my 95-minute treatment. I explained to her that it was my first visit and how excited I was about the experience. Unfortunately, that excitement quickly faded.

While the massage table was comfortable and warm, the experience ultimately felt like an overly expensive, $250 shampoo. The facial was underwhelming, with no standout techniques to make it memorable—though I did enjoy the initial application of the mask with a brush.

The shampoo was the most disappointing part. There seemed to be an issue with the water temperature, which Tiana apologized for, but the lack of pressure during the scalp massage made the experience less enjoyable. My hair, which is curly but very manageable, seemed to be a challenge for her. She struggled to work with my texture, and the tools she used never seemed to move past my temples.

I even encouraged her to apply more pressure during the scalp massage, saying, “Don’t be afraid to really get in there,” but there was no improvement. Similarly, the hot stone massage lacked sufficient pressure and felt more like a light touch. By the end, I was so frustrated that I just wanted the experience to be over.

As a massage enthusiast, this was one of the worst experiences I’ve had. I’ve received better chair and scalp massages at mall kiosks, and the shampoo massages I’ve had at beauty schools were superior—for a fraction of the cost.

At checkout, I thanked Tiana for her efforts, but I was further inconvenienced when I couldn’t fully exhaust the balance on my gift card. Since my credit card was charged for the deposit, I ended up with $45 left on the gift card. I decided to leave it as a tip, knowing I wouldn’t return.

To be fair, Tiana was very polite and provided excellent customer service. She even removed the extraction fee from my facial as a goodwill gesture for the water temperature issue. However, the overall experience was far from relaxing or worth the price.
