I'm not looking for perfection but damn! At the time of this review, this gym location has been open approximately 5 wks or so...I've been a member approximately 3 wks or so. This is my first gym membership ever, and I only joined for the pool. I ONLY use the the pool and showers. At first glance, this is a nice facility...the cynic in me will tell you, "of course it is! it's brand new!!" ...the unfortunate thing is that just 5 weeks in and I'm seeing issues. Yes, of course, every business will have its issues but so many so soon? (and mind you, i'm only here for an hour and a half 4 or so days a week). In the short time I've been using the facility, here are some of the things i've encountered (and mind you, I come in at 5am): 1. shower stalls with hair from the day before 2. one day there were multiple shower stalls with no curtains or curtains half ripped off 3. the pool with hair and tissue in it every time i use it. 4.a couple of days the door from the ladies locker room to the bathroom/shower area locked behind you and you couldn't get out. I was in the shower when i heard a lady panicking when she couldn't get out...I had to hurry my shower and get dressed to exit through the pool area and tell staff. I made sure to tell the male staff at the front desk and explained the urgency since the lady was panicking and he wasn't even registering the seriousness of the situation. I saw the lady the next day and she explained that another patron opened the door for her and told her that door had been like that for a few days (its usually propped open with a trashcan. I guess that day the staff forgot to prop it. I have noticed it has been propped open ever since. So, i'm guessing the issue has not been resolved yet?). 5. One morning, the staff trying to open up didn't even know how to open the front doors...one of the patrons waiting to get in had to assist her. 6. The ONLY morning/opening staff i have encountered to greet me with a smile have been Roxanne, and maybe one other (whose name i don't know)...all others barely even want to make eye contact. 6. Yesterday, Labor Day, the pool water was "foggy". There were others in the water and we questioned it amongst one another but continued with out workouts...there was no smell but i did notice the water was warmer than usual and rationalized that cloudiness with the hotter water coming in. 7. fast forward to today (the next day)...i get to the pool at 5a, i always rinse off in the shower by the pool prior to entering , turn the corner to see that the pool has been roped off with caution tape, and figured it's closed. I'll admit i was bummed, a little upset even ( because now i'm all wet and can't get my workout done). I went back into the shower area and debated whether to take my shower there or back at home. I decided on drying off a bit and going home to shower. i decided to leave through the pool area rather than walking through the entire gym and tracking water from my wt water shoes. as I left i checked the front desk--where there was no staff--and did see a page in a flyer frame-with notification that the pool is closed for maintenance. I was glad the notification was there but i didn't even see it when i checked in. It would have been nice if the staff had said "fyi the pool is closed" OR if the door from the shower room to the pool had been roped off as well. My suggestion to La Fitness is to take some of that membership money and invest in a text/email mass notification system so they can send alerts to members and members can avoid wasting time coming to the gym if the equipment they want to use if out of order or if a class has been canceled. ...i'm just sayin'...would be nice. I hope this review was helpful. I'm just telling it like it is. Have a nice day! (please excuse any typos or incorrect grammar--i'm not...
Read moreFirst, let me say I enjoy this gym. There are lots of good things about coming here. The folks at the front desk are pleasant and welcoming, however, over time, I've noticed that this location is chronically not that well maintained. It seems to take a long time to get equipment fixed and it always seems like something is missing such as paper towel dispensers are not monitored to check that they are filled and sanitation wipes are not filled at every station. For that, you don't have to have a fitness equipment repair person. I realize it is difficult to keep things filled and going at all times, but that seems to be the job of the maintenance folks. For example, I was in for a workout yesterday and I noticed that one of the paper towel dispensers in the women's locker room was empty. This is not the first time I've noticed this kind of thing and I didn't even say anything about that to the front office desk yesterday, but when I came back today, I noticed that the same dispenser was still empty. This time I mentioned the empty dispenser to the front office desk near the start of my workout today (as I was in for a workout for 2 days in a row) indicating that the same paper towel dispenser in the women's locker room was still empty just like yesterday. For me, that meant I had to walk down to the end of the line of sinks and get paper towels yesterday and today. Not such a big deal, I know there are more significant issues in the world than that. Even today, however, at the end of my workout which was a little more than an hour, I noticed that the same paper towel dispenser in the women's locker room was still empty. I realize that no one is going to jump straight up and immediately fill a paper towel dispenser just because one member voiced a concern. Covid is coming back. I just think there has to be more close monitoring when it comes to having sanitation wipes and the paper towel dispensers filled. I couldn't believe that 2 days in a row that the same paper towel dispenser had not been filled. Today, I mentioned to the front office folks that three of the four sanitation wipes stations that I visited were empty. That's both inconvenient and unnecessary. I know there is more than one rowing machine but there is frequently something going wrong with at least one of the rowing machines, too. Even the rowing machine near the mirrors, the little monitor on that rowing machine flips around and just needs to be tightened. A five minute fix as far as I know. I had to steady it in a perfect position to keep it from flipping around during my workout. Maybe the machines are not quality assurance checked proactively. I understand. That's a lot of work but I think that the gym relies too much on members to tell them what's missing, what's broken. As I said, there are some good things about this gym and I enjoy it, but I just think it needs a little more aggressive TLC and attention. This is not the only LA Fitness I have visited and no place is perfect, but I think this particular gym just needs to be neatened up just a...
Read moreLove the people at this location!!!. Specifically Mike Jones and his personal trainers. Mike has been my trainer since April 2025 and the results have been great- both physically and mentally. He’s a great accountability and even in his rare absence the other trainers are great too. He is optimistic and resilient and delivers a personally challenging workout every time. I’m a corporate Director and Type A personality type so I expect high quality and need flexibility with my demanding evolving schedule - & he has not disappointed me yet! From sharing education and encouraging words during session, to filtering through my own B.S and self limiting mindset, to even removing barriers that historically would have prevented me from prioritizing my fitness journey- like those evolving time constraints with work, life etc! The workout is always effective and just as dynamic as life’s curve balls so I would recommend him and his trainers to everyone!! I rarely do Google reviews but I had to show gratitude for Mike and the team….
I also love Nikoya Zumba classes! She has great music incorporating wide variety of hits and my personal fav hip hop and r&b selection- so it easy to forget your working out (kind of). She also pushes you and will end every session with breathing exercise and self love talk. Great Zumba teacher! (Honorable mention to my other fav teachers that are mainly instructors at other locations Vaughanda H. And Moira B!!- LOVEEEEEEE THEM for YEARRRRRS!!)
The cleaning staff is great at this location. It’s one of those things you under appreciate until you have been to facilities (like Bala) that had terrible maintain bathrooms all the time.
I’m giving 5 stars for the staff but I do wish is that corporate invested in this facility’s amenities more. Bring back the kid zone as that’s was why I originally joined this gym. Also put a sauna in the locker room and some massaging chairs or hydro beds or smoothie bar instead of a lounge tv area. The layout of the facility is not maximized for the amenities that even other “bargain” gyms have. My husband would also appreciate a basketball court too but understand that may impossible with space limitation to add one; but the kid zone is already there and just dead unused space and the lockers rooms are huge so for no sauna to be there is just ridiculous, poor use of sq footage etc. huge amenities misses that people ask and complain about often….
If it wasn’t for Mikes training, the staff and ease of Cheltenham’s location, I would just travel out the way to Abington/jenkintown who has the amenities you’d expect from an LA fitness- PLEASE just invest in those small amenities that make a...
