I am writing to formally report an incident of discriminatory treatment I experienced on June 26, 2025, at the REI store in Chico, California. While being assisted by a cashier named Bryn during a transaction, I was unexpectedly told by her to move to the end of the line so that two other customers—both young white males—could be helped ahead of me. I had already been waiting in line for approximately five minutes and was in the middle of my transaction when this occurred. I informed the cashier that I preferred to complete my transaction rather than lose my place. Following her comments, one of the customers became verbally aggressive toward me, yelling and making rude remarks, seemingly emboldened by the cashier’s actions. As a 70-year-old woman with a disability that limits my ability to stand for extended periods, I found this treatment not only deeply disrespectful but discriminatory. I firmly believe that if I were a white male, I would not have been treated in this manner. This experience was upsetting and humiliating. I believe it violates REI’s stated commitment to treating all customers fairly and with dignity. I am requesting a formal apology and assurance that steps will be taken to ensure no one else is subjected to the kind of discrimination I...
Read moreMost these 1 stars are haters. "There's no kayaks" "there is no sales" first off, its a camping store, not a water sport store, calm down. Youre lucky they have swim trunks. You want good quality backpacks, tents, hiking clothes? This is the spot. You want sales? They have structured sale dates; March: Member sale May: Memorial/Anniversary Sale (usually the biggest sale) June: Garage sale September: Labor day sale November: Black Friday (also called Gear Up) Sale
As for customer service? I had no problem, I brought my dog in (after calling ahead) and she got pets, i got help with my questions I bought a few things and I was happy.
Only gripe, why do they sell bikes? We have so many local bike shops. Always start local before you go to these big shops (even if it is a Co-Op). Other than that, don't listen to these haters. Go make your own experience. Im happy we got an REI and I look forward...
Read moreI love REI! am a big supporter of them since I lived in Seattle back in the 90s and have continued to be a member.I went into the brand new Chico store this evening. I was the only customer, maybe two more people walked in, and I saw at least four employees. A very quiet night, and they're probably feeling out the customer visits, since they're a new store. however, since I was one of only 3 customers I expected a lot more hovering and customer care, but I had to push the call button each time I wanted to try on clothing. I had to find someone when I had other questions. Everyone I talked to was kind but not engaging or creative. Their customer service needs a lot of improvement, engagement to sell more items that could be beneficial to the customer. The store looked good. But I didn't look around the whole shop. With some training for salespeople, I hope they...
