A Totally Different Perspective for Us We have visited Chincoteague and Assateague probably a dozen times over the years and for the past six visits we have toured the islands from a waterside point of view. I can assure you that every time we go to Chincoteague, a tour with Daisey’s Island Cruises is a must do on our list! During our most recent trip in September 2024, there was one other couple on our boat along with Captain Bill as our guide. Daisey’s pontoon boats are comfortable and well maintained. Bill offered binoculars for those who didn’t bring them, which is a thoughtful touch because you will definitely need them if you want the best view of everything there is to see. Luckily for us, many pods of dolphin were still in the Chincoteague area so we were able to see quite a few of them on the south side of the island. Captain Bill also pointed out NASA’s launch facility on Wallops Island. You’ll want to use binoculars to get a better view. I can’t say enough good things about Captain Bill. He’s a Chincoteague native and his knowledge of the island is deep and very interesting. He not only describes the history of Chincoteague, but he also shares some his personal memories of growing up on the island, all with a nice touch of humor and sincerity. I don’t know if he realizes it or not, but I believe that Captain Bill is a teacher at heart. This year was our third time with Captain Bill at the helm and we learned some new things about Chincoteague, Assateague and the ponies from him again. Keep in mind, we have had other Daisey’s Captains in the past, and every one of them was knowledgeable and very friendly. During this tour we were able to get very close to the stallion Riptide as well as mares and their foals that were grazing in a marsh. We shot some amazing photos that could almost pass as post cards. We also saw Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons and many other birds. A nice touch was a stop that we made in the channel between Assateague and Chincoteague where the ponies swim during the annual pony roundup. During the stop, Bill got out a beat-up old photo book. He used the photos to describe the round up and to point out various landmarks to us related to the round up. Daisey’s Island Boat Tours are advertised as being two hours long. There was so much to see that we needed that much time, and we were glad that Captain Bill wasn’t in a rush to get us back to the dock. Believe me. Driving the Assateague Wildlife Loop is nice, but you’ll never get the views and the variety that you get with a boat tour. If you decide to do it, I recommend Daisey’s...
Read moreAs per the email sent upon purchasing the tickets everyone should arrive 15 before the boat tour is scheduled to leave. We arrived 20 minutes early so we could get good seats and settle in for the tour . 3 families late arriving so they move our great seats to further back on the boat and not next to the window like we originally had just to accommodate these people who were late! And wouldn't you know they put me in front of a family with a toddler who kept smacking on my back ! I was really looking forward to this boat tour I was excited to find it on the top 10 best things to do while here ! It doesn't pay to be on time ! The family size was 6! We were only a party of 2 ! We had enough room for 2-3 more people to sit with us as well ! I was miserable the whole tour everyone they seated in our spots had great views that we originally chose for our great views! So for this I will have to give a terrible review and advise you to go just right before the boat pulls off and push the people that got there first out of their seats to accommodate all the...
Read moreWe signed up for a 6:15 a.m. cruise to take our families to (hopefully) see part of the herd round up in preparation for this year's pony swim. We were aware that the ponies are wild and unpredictable and that we may see very little of the action. When we arrived at the marina we were the only guests on the boat and the crew made every effort for our families (with seven kids under the age of 10) to feel very welcome and special. They shared their knowledge and experience and, with the help of cooperative ponies, we had an amazing, unforgettable morning. Our captain used his experience of assisting with the round up in the past to put us in a great position as the herds began to move and we had front row seats! And after an unforgettable experience they kept working to then find dolphins for us. Having done a 2 hour cruise with Daisey's in the fall we knew it would be an enjoyable tour no matter what, but the crew made it extra...
