Here is my honest and thoughtful review as a person who has completed their BSN degree at DCN-HTX.
This is a newer school that is approved by the Texas Board of Nursing and accredited by the Higher Education Commission. DCN-HTX is growing and adjusting to the needs of the student body. Because nursing school is just hard and I did arrive at this school when it was brand new I had to be flexible and self-motivated to keep going when things changed or adjusted based on the needs of my cohort. With that being said...
THIS SCHOOL DOES A GREAT JOB OF GIVING YOU ACCES TO THE RESOURCES YOU NEED TO SUCCEED.
-Courses were a mix of in-person and online. I had professors that were new at teaching (but not new to nursing) and very experienced professors. The learning curve at DCN is steep so I would advise anyone that is a slower learner to take the traditional route. DCN does not slow down the bus for anyone. -SIM LAB is very technology advanced. (many changes have taken place and it really does give you a taste of the bedside experience). -Clinical sites are all over greater Houston. Be prepared to drive, although they try to keep you in your area its not a guarantee. A student with little to no flexibility may be unsatisfied if they only want to go to one type of facility. -Learning Resource Center (LRC - think library) has a variety of resources (books, flashcards, etc) to help you on your journey. They do not play about them resources so be diligent in returning them so another student can have a chance to learn. I would have liked for the hours to be a little more open as I worked and it would be great to have access during the weekends. -The Student and Career Services department does a great job of being a liasion between students and staff. They try to support the student body with activities that enrich the learning environment and allow students to engage and connect with each other outside of the academic environment. Between the Student Nurse Association and Global Health Perspectives you will find a chance to develop leadership and teamwork skills outside of the classroom. Overall I am happy to have attended DCN - HTX. I was able to pass NCLEX on my first attempt and have secured a nurse residency. I would recommend this program to any student who has a desire to help patients/families, is highly self-motivated and determined, sets high goals for themselves, and has the ability to be FLEXIBLE and remain...
Read moreGraduated in spring of 2024 in the accelerated BSN program and have been wanting to write this review to share my experience at this school. I believe that a lot of the complaints in the other reviews are fair but they do not describe my experience at all.
Pros: They give you exactly what they pitch, I am now officially licensed as a nurse and I felt almost over prepared for the NCLEX. 85% of my instructors felt like they were knowledgeable and truly cared about how we did as students, which is a far cry from my other undergraduate degree (at CU Boulder) where the professors couldn't have cared less. If you are a good student and can keep your way out of grade trouble it is pretty smooth sailing with the administration. Sim was fantastic and I feel like I learned a ton in those classes, scheduling could be a bit rough though as my cohort would sometimes have to wait 3-4 hours between sims.
Cons: The price is pretty hefty but from what I understand pretty comparable to other private accelerated nursing programs. Clinical coordination was a mess pretty much every quarter but it was always handled before anything big came up, just anxiety inducing when we were in limbo. The real complaints in the review here I feel come from students who may have not passed a class or two, DCN's policy towards getting
Read moreLet me start off by saying that I'm not a family member, I'm not a friend, and I'm not faculty. I love, love, love this college!!!! I had a hard time transferring my credits from my ADN FL program. DCN is the "sister" college of Fortis College. I had completed my LPN through Fortis. DCN took most of my Fortis credits leaving me with about 7K in tuition!!!! I wanted to complete my BSN in one year so I took 3 classes and almost had a nervous breakdown, and withdrew from the program (I had about 3 weeks left to finish). Once the faculty heard they sprung into action to help me. I experienced so much support, and individualized tutoring. A lot of late night zoom meeting and texting. The Dean, Director of nursing, and my professor (shout out to professor S.B I absolutely love you!) allowed me to work on my past due assignments for 2 weeks after my class graduated! I cried from pure happiness. I was able to complete the Capstone and graduate. This school is not a scam, and did not screw me out of $$$ like my Florida university did. You have to be vocal to the "RIGHT" people regarding your needs, wants, and requests. You have to do your research and compare colleges before signing on the dotted line. Tuition? If you've never taken many college courses, then there's not going to be much of a reduction off your tuition costs unless you are Military or you bring a lot of transfer credits to the table like I did. Long story short, everyone's experience will be different. My experience was AWESOME! I can't wait until they offer the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner's program. My colleagues and I will be the first in line. Thanks DCN. You...
