My fiance came in to see Hani today so incredibly excited to get her hair colored before her final dress fitting in a 2 days before our wedding in less than 2 months. I have not met Hani in person, but I just spoke to her on the phone regarding the reason my fiance called me upset today, sending me the picture she showed and discussed with Hani of the "warm blonde" color she was hoping for (which to me looks like yellow-ish blonde) but I'm a guy :) She then texted me a picture of her hair that Hani spent 4.5 hours coloring. During that time, Hani missed her roots, corrected them, needed to take different approaches because the color was not working, all of which turned her hair to be so light blonde it is now almost white. My mother is and has been a hairstylist my entire life and I understand different types of hair is harder to work with. My fiance even was understanding but was kindly honest with Hani and, being the haircut she will see herself in her wedding dress, truthfully and kindly let Hani know that her hair was clearly not a "warm blonde", but Hani said she did it right and it looks perfect. That is something to take as constructive criticism. Especially given the weight of this appointment. But Hani reacted like a chef telling a customer the food they just cooked them is perfect when the customer can't swallow a bite. It's for the customer to judge. And a good chef would apologize and make another dish to their liking. In this metaphor, the customer was charged for both dishes. I know my fiance questioned why Hani's pricing increased for the same amount of time (4.5 hours of coloring) in 6 months by 1.5 times. Compared to rates I've researched in the area, on the high end, a full cut + full highlight/coloring is $150. Hani charged $200 + a generous tip 6 months ago, and for an important haircut that turned out very different from what my fiance wanted, and for the same 4.5 hours, she charged $350.
On the phone Hani told me that she was being professional with my fiance and that my fiance upset her. I truly tried to see both sides when Hani said she had unique hair and then she flipped from being nice to mean and made me feel guilty by saying she put so much chemical in it that she got a headache from it. My understanding is that she had to correct her hair several times which made her 2 hour appointment take 4.5 hours. Most of all, before my fiance left, she clearly heard Hani saying incredibly mean things about my fiance, who happens to be the most kind, selfless person I've ever met. At least wait for her to leave before you show how "professionally" you interact with your clients. This was in front of her next client. Hani then got upset at me when I tried to help her understand that her work was very different from what my fiance showed her she wanted which, paired with the large price increase, and that it was what she will see herself in her wedding dress for the last time until our big day, was what made her upset. Her response was very professional...to look at her Yelp and Google reviews and see how good she is through them, then hung up on me while I was being calm and still respectful.
I know coloring hair doesn't always turn out as expected, but I strongly believe that you should always act professionally and not like a high school teenager, talking behind people's backs while they can hear you. That is how you lose clients. And in this industry, word of mouth is your strongest friend. If Hani gets angry and mean at her clients, then she is clearly in the wrong industry. I was kind and understanding on the phone. And the moment I tried to show her my fiance's perspective, she became a different person, referenced her Yelp and Google reviews, and hung up on me. I'm sorry on behalf of Blithe Salon. You don't deserve to lose clients because of one bad apple. Thank you for your time in reading this.
Edit* I appreciate your response but I understand why you wouldn't like to address everything or anything I mentioned. Because you can't defend how terribly offensive you were....
