This bookstore is simply fantastic. I could really just leave my review at that, and it would cover every aspect of the store. The selections are extensive and up to date, including some older hard to find books. The store is always clean and free of debris and the staff is eager to help and answer any questions that you might have with a smile.
When I first entered here I felt like I was going back to an old library filled with thousands of old novels. It has the stranger but appealing smell that books have and the decor and ambiance of the coloring scheme makes it feel like its an old library. Everything is sectioned in easy to discover cateogries making finding what you're interested in reading simple to find. The pricing here is also really great easily beating the other competition in the area, but still keeping with the standard rate for books. Its not Yard sale cheap, but its also not major chain expensive.
The atmosphere and ambiance of the place is accented by keeping the "dirty" feel of an old bookstore without actually having any dirt. The wooden themed shelving and floors just have a distinct worn and weathered look to it which makes it appear old, which I guess it is for how long they have been here, but it feels much older which is great for me in a bookstore.
Service with a smile I think might be one of their company policies because it is all I have ever encountered while in the store. You don't get hounded for a sale but you also aren't ignored. The staff looks attentive if you seem to be struggling and they will have the answer to your questions or know how to get the answers without throwing out the standard "Oh let me check my system." They will go to where it should be and hunt for what you're looking for and 99% of the time find it.
Overall for me there is no better bookstore within a few hundred miles when I want that genuine bookstore experience without the pretentious, smug attitude I tend to find at other places. They have all the books I want (or will order them for the oddballs), the staff is fantastic, and the ambiance cannot be beat. It is worth the drive down if you're not local to get your...
Read moreThis is a huge, beautiful bookstore in downtown Denver! Parking is a problem at times, but there's a parking lot directly across the street that's safe and cheaper than parking lots (pay per hour until 6p?, then it's a flat fee of $15 until 6a? the following morning).
The service here is good; they let you browse uninterrupted until you need help, then their knowledge and professionalism are top-notch. Their bathrooms are clean, as well.
They have many, many rooms with books in every genre, as well as a big cards section and magazine section. The cards are all kept together, but the magazines are spread out over a few rooms, due to the main room also being used as a guest lecturer seating area, with 3 rows of really comfortable padded chairs in the back for anytime use.
They also have a small cafe/snack area, although there's not always someone behind it to serve. You can also bring in water bottles.
There's some seating placed around the store, but mostly in the lecturer room or nearby, or in several of the more secluded rooms with the travel books. The store is very clean, so you can also sit and read on the floor if the mood strikes.
I very highly recommend this store. It had a great section of books in every subject, like a usual bookstore, and also some magazines and books exclusive to Colorado, like '5280'. I very highly recommend this store. Its Yelp and Google reviews...
Read moreWell, I appreciate the tatter cover stores for being a staple of Colorado and Denver as a whole. Even to the point where the character of Micah from Warehouse 13s Father on the bookstore (Yes it's a stereotype that coloradans love bookstores apparently). This location is more of a tourist trap. Which makes sense due to it being inside Union Station. My suggestion to tourists would be to just walk a couple blocks further down the road to the real tatted cover bookstore. It's well worth the walk, you'll have a much wider selection, Access to a coffee shop that is owned by them rather than one of the many gentrified coffee shops that have weaselled their way into this building. And you'll be able to see the historic building for yourself. That's not to say Union Station isn't historic, but it's not a significant to this business. Now for the usual stuff, It's very crowded due to its small size, not very loud because of the bookstore but can quickly become flooded with people due to it being connected to a train station. The staff are friendly enough, but are less knowledgeable than those who work at the real bookstore down the block. I'd recommend that they hold events here, signings or something like that. As this place serves far better as an advertisement for the business than a proper...
