I had previously read another client's review from Sept 2025 - they mentioned the steam room was broken, there was no music during their massage and that the showers had mold or dark stains in the grout.
My husband and I booked a couples massage and specifically selected The Oxford, because it was supposed to offer a "more luxurious experience" with the steam room listed as an amenity. We were celebrating and really wanted to go "all out" to treat ourselves.
The administrator called to confirm our appt the day before. We arrived at our appt 30 mins early (as requested). When I asked my husband if he wanted his swimsuit so he had it for the steam room after our massage, the receptionist said that it had broken that AM and she hoped it would be operational by the time our massages were completed. OK
When it was time for our massages, my husband requested they turn on some music and we were told the internet was down, so it would be a "silent massage". This doesn't make a lot of sense to me, because it sounds like an ongoing issue (per other reviewers). Why can't the masseurs have portable speakers that connect to their phones or even an old-fashioned boombox that plays CDs? We both thought it was odd that they haven't found a solution to a simple problem.
Our massages were very good and both masseurs checked in with us throughout to ensure we were comfortable.
After the massage, we checked in with the receptionist to see if the steam room was operational - it was not. I was surprised at this time they didn't offer us a discount. The steam room was part of the reason we selected The Oxford.
We decided to shower and leave. My husband noted the stained and moldy-looking grout on the men's side. I understand it's a historic building, so I am pretty forgiving about cracked tiles and "worn" fixtures, but on the women's side - each shower stall had an accumulation of hair in the drain. Gross! It was NOT busy when I was there and I thought maybe it was just the shower stall I was in, but I walked by the others and several had hairballs.
I understand the steam room can break down, the internet can go on the fritz (still don't get why they can't plug in a CD?), the tiles can look shabby, but there's really no excuse for hairballs in the shower stalls. As I said, it was NOT busy. I had the entire women's bathroom to myself, except for 2 ladies who were leaving as I came in.
So - the massages were very good, but we will not return. The Oxford charges a premium for their services and we selected them for the "luxury experience". I could have had that same experience elsewhere for hundreds of dollars less.
We did pay fully for our services and tipped our masseurs (because we didn't think they should be penalized for our disappointment with The Oxford), but I was truly shocked that we were not offered a discount for the inconvenience of their other amenities not being available. We made it clear that the steam room was something we had been looking forward to.
My advice to the Oxford - have backup music available in the room - "the internet is down" isn't a viable excuse anymore. Also, please have someone clean the showers regularly after use. We picked your establishment because we were looking for a luxurious and special treat, but seeing hairballs floating around my feet was just gross and...
Read moreFirst, I have never been SO SORE after a massage! My massage therapist took 30 seconds before our session to sit down and "listen" to my needs/expectations. That was completely pointless. It was very clear she gave me the same general (unpleasant) massage she gives everyone else, despite my speaking up during the session and telling her before-hand that I don't like deep tissue, that I prefer a relaxing massage. But apparently she was in "her zone" and I was apparently in a car crash. I also asked to please go slightly deeper on my mid/lower-back and this area was barely touched. She spent about 35 min on my neck and shoulders (why so long??) and I was wincing and tensing up as she dug her elbows into my most tender areas. Since she was clearly oblivious to my visible and physical discomfort, I asked her to go a little lighter. She did--for about a solid minute, then right back to deep tissue. I am SO sore today (a full 24 hours after) that I can barely move. I need a massage due to my "massage." Second, it would have been nice if the hostess communicated to the massage therapist that she had JUST poured me a glass of wine (I went upstairs a full 18 minutes earlier than my appointment just to enjoy this, as I had timed my day out perfectly). She walked out 10 seconds after I sat down in the waiting room drink-in-hand to see if I was ready to go back. Then you feel rushed to guzzle down your full glass on a day when you specifically don't wish to be rushed. A little communication (and observation) goes a long way and if your massage is booked for noon, don't come see if I'm ready at 11:42 with a full glass in my hand, because, I'm not. Lastly, the first person at reception told me they had to charge me for a day pass to use the gym, despite having multiple spa treatments booked (really??). I reluctantly agreed since I showed up 2 hours early JUST so I could use the gym. Then, at checkout, turns out a manager just happened to be standing there and says I shouldn't have been charged for that (a "training moment" she called it). Good thing I spoke up about my chagrin. To top it off, the steam room was out...
Read moreI told them they aren't able to even price a pedicure at $100. The spa chairs are Homedics brand and they turn off after about 5-10 minutes. The foot tub does not even have jets. The pedicure is 80 minutes only because the girl slows to a crawl filing, and filing, and filing. Yes, she is very gentle and that's nice but sloppy with the polish, I felt more acetone corrections than anything else. It still felt like she was rushed because she even forgot to do a callus file on my right foot, I noticed this because she had already began the foot scrub when she realized she forgot to apply some sort of cuticle cream. I had to watch her struggle to do both. I had no paraffin treatment and they use the thinnest towels that barely had heat by the time she put them on. The "massage" portion of the pedicure was a few squeezes on my foot. I honestly feel like I could have had a better, more cost effective pedi from almost anywhere. The decor was nice but kind of cheap like a Marshalls or Ross type of decor set up. I had my headphones in but that didn't block the sound of the washing machine thumping on the floor or the talking between the employees before most left. I ordered the mud bath for my partner. He said it was pretty watery and not up to expectations. He is a massage therapist and was very happy the massage was the shortest part of his experience. All this to the lovely sounds of pop music! Thank god for my headphones. Oh yeah, when I told the guy how I felt about the services he was a bit of a smart ass about it. I mean I just dropped over $300 for subpar services the least you could do is forward the customer's comments...
