I was looking forward to a relaxing night at Book Tower in Downtown Detroit, but the experience was completely ruined by one of the so-called managers â Jono at Kamperâs.
Me and my friend ordered food at the bar downstairs. We specifically asked both the waiter and hostess if we could take our food to the rooftop. They told us yes, no hesitation. Even walked us up. Everything was chill.
Until it wasnât.
We sat down, ordered a drink, and started eating â only to realize my salad had burnt, dried-out chicken. Literally couldnât eat it. We politely let the waitress know, and she did the right thing by sending someone from downstairs to handle it. He agreed it wasnât right and said heâd bring us a new one. Cool.
Then this guy Jono walks over â no introduction, no âHi, Iâm the manager,â just an immediate attitude. He tells us we canât have food upstairs. When we explained we got the okay twice, he says, âWell theyâre not the manager. It has to go through me.â
Huh? How are guests supposed to know your internal hierarchy? We donât work here.
Instead of fixing the situation or even apologizing for the confusion, he stood there asking if we were done and ready to leave â twice. Mind you, we were still waiting on our corrected food. He didnât care. His tone was condescending, cold, and flat-out rude.
After waiting over 30 minutes, we said forget it, left without our drink, and got a refund downstairs â where the staff was actually decent.
Hereâs the thing: Book Tower is stunning, sure â but itâs still Detroit, and if you want people to keep coming back, hospitality better match the aesthetics. You canât treat guests like theyâre a nuisance just because your staff didnât communicate properly.
Jono was unprofessional, hostile, and completely out of line. He embarrassed himself, not us.
I wonât be back. And Iâll gladly steer...

Read moreItâs was a great day when I noticed the Book Tower. The top is gabled and appears to be ornately decorated. The decorations continue down the town in a sparse fashion until they reach the bottom where they pick up again. Many of them are being refurbished or replaced right now, that is, the ones that are at ground level.
I wasnât aware at first that it was being renovated. It looked like a fine building. Unbelievably this massive structure had apparently not only been vacated by tenants but abandoned. It stood empty for many years. Right now it is being remodeled. It is a pleasure to watch the work progress.
There is a lot of construction activity in the street below as the street level spaces are being renovated. Up above the sounds and sights of highrise construction go on through the day. The offices are large and spacious. I am looking forward to seeing what will take up the space on the first floor.
The building is centrally located in downtown. There is a large adjunct building attached to it. There is a LOT of space in there! There are plenty of apartments nearby that are in good shape or in buildings that are undergoing renovations also.
If you are looking for office space in Detroit this is a great building to keep an eye on. I...
