Would not recommend to anyone, staff is very rude. I ordered the tickets online and added them to Apple wallet as recommended, when I got there they didn’t scan any of the tickets and they make you pay for shoe check. As soon as I get on the ice I can tell the zamboni hasn’t gone over the ice in a while because of all of the big chips and shaved ice on the top. I immediately asked the staff when they would be going over it and was told 10 minutes but that never happened so I asked a different staff member and was told they didn’t know. It took them a hour and a half to finally go over the ice. While they were using the zamboni one of the staff members skated behind it, causing the ice to be very bumpy. They then decided to add cones all around the middle so no one could skate on the words. It took them 20 minutes to let us back onto the ice so I had 10 minutes of my window left on what was supposed to be good ice but still wasn’t. When it was the end of my time I went to the front and asked to speak to the manager who I already knew was the older guy with a beard because of what a staff member had said to me prior but when they opened the door to the managers room it smelled heavily of weed and the manager decided to send out someone else. I tried to shake the guys hand but he refused then I communicated how unhappy I was with this experience and the ice and was told no refunds nor accommodations were available. As I’m walking out the guy starts yelling and trying to fight with me and continued to follow me down the street and yell at me until I was out of sight. I’ve skated my whole life and could automatically tell the ice was awful, I can’t imagine how hard it was for the kids and adults trying to skate for the first time and not knowing how the ice should be. P.S. the rental skates are dull which makes it hard already for new skaters. I was also told to come on a better day and if they knew the ice was awful they should’ve have even opened or at least shouldn’t have charged full price. Also the random guy the manager sent out after I explained how the ice was so bad it’s dulling my blades (which will need to be sharpened now) he said and I quote “go spend that extra little money” and when I said not everybody has money to be spending like that (mind you 40$ for skating plus the 20$ for parking plus the gas money to get from Grand Rapids Michigan to get to Detroit) he repeated saying “just spend that money, just spend that money”. The rink is way smaller than expected. Awful experience I suggest going anywhere else. The picture below is the ice after freshly being zambonied...
Read moreHuge waste of time and money. Date gone wrong. I will never return to take part in these festivities..
First and foremost, I always add that I am a very patient and nice customer (I worked customer service many years) and I was on the receiving end of some rude behavior from the staff. I tried on a pair of size 9 skates and they were very tight so when I returned to the desk to switch sizes and quickly explained they were too tight, the man tried to argue with me, so I explained further that I just need a size up because there’s no wiggle room and they aren’t wide enough, to which another man very sarcastically replied, “oh no better get the heat gun out...”
Funny? Yes. Rude? Very.. Totally uncalled for.
After paying 30$ for admission for two with skate rental, I proceeded to the ice where there were so many people skating that I couldn’t even hold hands with my boyfriend because there simply was not room to comfortably skate alongside one another, which wouldn’t be so bad if admission wasn’t so expensive. I was on the ice about ten minutes before I was grabbed by 3 different falling people and ran into once and I finally called it quits and thought to myself what a ridiculous waste of money It was.. I wouldn’t recommend this activity to any of my...
Read moreGreat fun at the rink although it's quite small. I am sure they had no idea how big Detroit was going to be today. I hope they can eventually reconfigure it as there is plenty of space for more. The outdoor shops and the Parc restaurant are on the rink and were bustling and there was quite a bit of holiday cheer. I don't recommend skating too fast or being too great at the sport, because you will likely run over some child or relatively bad skater like me. As a beginner, I was happy to be with like-skaters, but I also managed to almost run down a little girl. My only option was to pick her up before taking...
