Love this mid-century modern hotel. Its storied history is just the icing on the cake. It's actually the third Ponchartrain Hotel to be built on this site.||Location is good; a decent walk to many places; in good weather, a brisk 20 minute walk will get you to Comerica Park and Ford Field. The "people mover" train station is in the Huntington Plaza building. kitty corner from the main entrance on ground level. I picked up the train at the Cadillac Plaza Station a few blocks from Comerica Park for a convenient return from a Tigers game. Be advised that there is only valet parking, at $45/day without "in/out" privileges.||Can't help but wonder how they clean all that glass; both on the big windows in the rooms and in the public areas, but they do. Whole place is very well-maintained, including hallways and guest rooms. Finishes are top notch with new appearing fixtures and ceramic tile in the (tiny) bathroom with excellent (also small) shower. Rooms are also perhaps below average in size, but my bed was fabulous (firm), pillows decent, and the rooms were attractive. I liked the seemingly new silky blue window drapes with sheer curtains. Room and bath maintenance and cleanliness were all above average.|| I stayed in a queen suite (which doubles my space and is nicely laid out with glass windowed doors to the bedroom) The living room had a large marble top dining table and four upholstered wood dining chars; making the room seem less spacious. There are two large TV's; one had cable channels; while oddly the other had only numerous streaming options (no live news) If TV is important to you, you might want to check the TV inputs on your set to make sure you get both. The suite was only $40 more and includes a wet bar. All rooms have refrigerators. There are no microwaves available, except a small one off the lobby in the gift shop/snacking area. ||There is no room service, and for carryout you need to order in person at the restaurant (there are two restaurant /bars) but last orders to kitchen are 9pm, both restaurants and bars close at 10 pm. Only hot breakfast is a buffet in the restaurant off the lobby, for $18.49--total $20.09. There aren't many hot choices; but a decent variety overall, with a large selection of fresh fruit, Danish, English muffins and bagels for toasting; yogurt, juices, etc. The room is a very a nice place to eat in the morning, with a wall of windows and views.||What is really exceptional about Ft. Ponchartrain is the people who work there; from the Front Desk, to the morning buffet staff, to the valet parking team. These are the nicest most accommodating folks you could hope for. They really help elevate your...

What was supposed to be a little weekend getaway with my partner, turned into a disaster. On April 15th, I reserved the king bed deluxe room with a riverfront view for June 6-8th. $635.41 total for stat. So imagine my surprise when we walked into our “deluxe” room to find that we had been placed in an ADA compliant room facing a building (massive room with barely any furniture or surfaces, accessibility bars everywhere. My partner is a medical professional and said it felt like she was back at work.. not the kind of weekend I had hoped for). I was honestly willing to let it slide but it was super uncomfortable not being able to shut the bathroom door or set my things down while I got ready. Our friends were also guests at the same time so I got to see their room. It was so cute, cozy and it faced the river… The room I paid for but didn’t get. But I let it slide.
The room was mostly clean at least, aside from a mysterious yellowish stain on the mattress protector. We wouldn’t have ever noticed it though if it wasn’t for the ill fitting sheets on the bed. Everytime we moved through the night the corners would fly up and tangle the blanket. We were bummed. We were really looking forward to a little rejuvenation. But alas, there are worst things I suppose. We moved about our weekend until we checked out on Sunday. I accepted the offer to check out online around 10:00 am. We waited what seemed like forever to even get down to the lobby. I believe they need to invest in a service elevator for workers instead of hogging two of the 4 elevators. I almost had to carry 50 lbs and 30 lbs of luggage down 8 flights of stairs because we had waited over 35 minutes for an available elevator. We made it through that, just to wait another 35 minutes for our car. $45 for valet service that requires you to basically walk across the street is strange. But we almost didn’t care because we were so relieved to finally get out of there. I was looking forward to putting the mediocre experience behind me until I noticed that they overcharged me almost $300. There’s a charge for $640.92 as well as one for $267.85. This was Sunday. Since then, I’ve made multiple grueling phone calls, left numerous voicemails, and sent 3 emails hoping to get things sorted. I’ve spent so much time and energy on this, but to no avail. I feel so taken advantage of. For now, I’m out over $900 for the worst hotel experience of my life. I will never forget this. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for your...
Read moreBooked what was supposed to be a king deluxe room with city/river view. I received a preregistration email that asked if I wanted to upgrade to a deluxe room for $20 more which I thought was odd since I had booked a deluxe room. When we walked into the room the bathroom was super tiny and the shower was a 3x3 cube. Not at all like what was pictured. Disappointed right away.
Forward to evening. We were sleeping. At midnight we were woke up from the alarm clock in the room next to us going off. After a couple minutes I called the front desk and was immediately put on hold without being spoken to. After holding for 8-9 minutes I hung up and immediately called back. They answered at once so I’m sure I was forgotten on hold. Told them what was going on and they were going to send someone right up. We waited 15 minutes and still no one showed up. During this time my husband went outside. When he came back in he said there were 8-9 hotel staff hanging out at some tables they had pushed together in the lobby having a good ol’ time. I called back again. We have been listening to this alarm clock for 30 minutes at this point. She said oops, we got busy and I forgot. I’ll send someone up right away. Security finally comes up. They proceed to POUND on the door and yell SECURITY for several minutes. They finally go in the room and the alarm stops at 12:36am. Thank god! My husband jokingly says they probably just hit the snooze button. No joke, 9 minutes later the alarm clock is going off AGAIN!!! It took all I had to not go off on the person that answered the phone when I called the front desk again! Of course they say they’re sending someone right up. We can hear security complaining in the hallway about having to come back up to deal with this. Cue the pounding on the door and the yelling again. FINALLY at 12:50am the alarm clock stops. We are both completely irritated and totally awake at this point. We eventually get back to sleep. At 6:30 we are being woke up by road construction going on outside. We can’t catch a break! Go to make a cup of coffee in the Keurig…the universe says nope! You only get decaf or green tea to choose from! No coffee for you today! Aaarrrgghhh!!! We left this hotel tired and crabby. We were headed to the Tigers game that afternoon and then had a 4-hour drive home. Needless to say, it was...
