University Foods — Local services in Detroit

For a supermarket it is good. It has a wide variety of food and cooking/cleaning supplies, especially after the renovation it had a year or 2 ago. They have expanded their multiethic food section (which is pretty extensive now) and provide towards the back some of the proper cooking pans needed such as woks, etc. It's convenient if you live in the area but for some items you pay for that convenience. It's alright but it does have some good upsides such as having a UPS package delivery locker and a coin counter. It also has a counter where you can purchase pizza and shwarmas on the go. Someone really needs to investigate this place. The meats are questionable and the food is always outdated and they lower the prices. People usually don’t check the data but, I do and I noticed. That they will keep the outdated items on the self until someone comes to buy it. The garbage bin in the back always smells really really bad. Yesterday I brought some steaks and realized that the price wasn’t bad but, the steaks weren’t cut the right way. The fact that this store has been around for years in an area where people are mostly on a fixed income and this is the quality of food that they are offered is crazy. The problem with chain grocery stores is that while they’ll have national items that we all know and love, it can be hard to find higher-quality items from time to time. The problem with shopping at a organic grocers is the opposite - Traditional items are harder to find. University Foods is nice because they bridge the gap for both. The selection is a bit more limited for those on a budget, but that doesn’t mean that this place doesn’t have rock-solid deals if you know how to shop right (and I’d like to hope that an increase in patronage would lead to an increase in purchasing power for the store.)
