I came in on a Saturday afternoon with my young son. I am from here. Not a tourist, not a transplant. Iâve seen the customer service plummet in my once favorite town more and more in recent years so I write this review in hopes that the business owners and chamber will start to step up and redirect the trajectory of this town.
Weâve never been in this toy store before. We were happy there was a new one to replace our favorite that closed years ago. I walked in with my three year old and began to browse the middle section where the registers are. I took my sons picture in the big feet and as we started to look at the toys, I overheard three employees who were hanging out around the register; none of which greeted us. I heard one of the young men employees loudly telling the others a story about how he was âbisexualâ and went on to describe his night out. At that time, I was passing the register area near the stairs and made eye contact with one of the employees in an effort to say âyou have customersâ thinking he would stop or at least talk more quietly. He came briefly over and asked if I needed anything. I said no, we were just looking, and he went right back to his story with the others, saying something like âhe knew I was bisexualââŠ.âI was under the porch begging them toâŠ..â (blah blah blahâŠall about his weird date with some other weird person, doing weird stuff. This should be none of my childâs business!)
My son and I walked down the stairs of the upper area after hearing way too much of this. I walked by again and gave the employees a raised eyebrow in another attempt to say âdo you realize this is a childrenâs toy store and some parents donât want our kids to have to hear about what you are talking about?â My son wanted to get a wooden train car, that honestly, I probably wouldâve bought, but I was so disgusted by them talking that way in the vicinity of children (aka a toy store) while the customer service was nonexistent and terrible. I didnât even know there was an option to buy tickets for anything or that there was a mining thing available. That wouldâve been nice to let my son check out, but honestly, we wonât be back in after the short but gross experience we had. I just hope the owners do some more extensive training on what is acceptable behavior around kids and families. Also no one cared we were there. Very disappointed. Someone should tell those employees thatâs not a bar anymore. Perhaps theyâre just confused about where theyâre working.
PS: I saw someone else comment about being treated poorly here and thought it may be because they are Native American. We are white and got incredibly poor service and had a bad experience too so it may be an employee issue as well. Who knows- seems like no oneâs knows how to treat customers anymore. Maybe downtown needs to partner up with the Shriners or Senior center and let the Gen Z employees in Durango shadow the Post War folks for a week or twoâŠtrain them on how to respect...
Read moreMy family and I saw there was a recently opened store where the old Irish Embassy used to be. We always try to shop local. We went in and looked around at all the variety of merchandise. My 18 year old daughter asked if there was a restroom. The girl sitting at the register told her they had no public restrooms and she would have to go down the street 2 blocks to the visitor center for public restrooms. After about 10 minutes into our shopping another young lady walked in and asked the same employee if there was a restroom. She was handed a key and told where the restrooms were located. I asked why my daughter wasnât allowed to use the restroom and was told it was for customers only. My daughter was in the store longer than the girl that just walked in. I wonder if itâs because my daughter is Native American and the other girl was white. My daughter is a better person than me because she still bought the blanket she intended to buy even after the she was refused the restroom. When I asked about the double standard I was met with fumbling excuses and no apology to my daughter. She offered the restroom after the fact. I donât see that as acceptable. I donât see me browsing or recommending this new store to anyone. I wish you luck with your employees. I agree with the 1 star...
Read moreI recently spent a delightful time browsing in Durango Treasures sited in a historic building in downtown Durango. It has dark wood trim throughout the store which must have made for great restaurant decor. There are lots of toys for kids, some for pets and other upscale touristy pet items. Elsewhere you see handicrafts of pottery, soaps, metalwork, and quilted bags and blankets. I found a heavy metal wind chime in the shape of a layered pinecone that will be perfect during our NM windy days. They also have quality tourist items like shot glasses, t-shirts & sweatshirts and some jewelry. The two young women who were working offered many delightful tidbits about Durango re eateries and the fact the Colorado blue columbine is the state flower in spite of the MANY sunflowers seen...
